St Michael’s Environmental Education and Residential Centre Peak District National Park

St Michael’s Centre (StM) is located in the heart of the Peak District National Park and has been welcoming school groups for 40 years. In 2019 the centre became the first Peak District National Park Ambassador Centre.

School groups benefit from exclusive use of StM and work with a small team of dedicated and professional staff. The centre offers exceptional opportunities to enhance the school curriculum with a range of activities, all designed to take advantage of the Peak District’s rich history and geography. Our experiences’ enable children to build life-enhancing skills such as team working, problem solving, communication skills and resilience as well as creating memories to treasure for life.

• Groups undertake a selection of outdoor educational activities tailored to suit your needs, such as local adventure walks, orienteering, environmental studies such as stream studies, minibeasting and dry stone walling. We have a wonderful woodland campfire area. 
• We offer a home from home, with dorm style rooms with bunk beds, boys and girls bathrooms and a shared living/kitchen/dining space.
• We offer part-catered packages or self-catering.  
• We are located in the centre of Hathersage, meaning there are local amenities, including local pubs and restaurants giving the opportunity to eat out (if required), as well as an outdoor heated pool.
• Great Public transport links – Hathersage train station is 10 minutes walk away, so why not get the train here and enhance the residential experience!

We can sleep up to 34 children (plus 4 staff beds) in 7 dormitories, which includes 2 teacher rooms. We also have an adjoining holiday cottage which can sleep up to 4, which can be easily added onto bookings for staff use.

We are a local authority operated Centre with comprehensive risk management procedures which can be provided on request and throughout the planning and the visits approval process. 

Visitors are encouraged to take photos/video/audio of their own children subject to their own organization’s policy. There are no copyright restrictions.

Great Value Residentials (1st April 2025 to 31st March 2026) based on a two-night stay

• Part catered: Charge per child up to 20 – £130, then additional children up to the maximum of 34 charged at £85.
• Self-catering: Charge per child up to 20 – £98, then additional children £53. 
• Adults stay for FREE with all school bookings. MINIMUM group size 20 children

Many of the StM Staff are First Aid trained however the school will be required to have their own first aid trained staff member(s) due to being at the Centre overnight without StM Staff present.

We have a dedicated and qualified catering manager who can cater for all dietary requirements. Menu options are chosen in advance.

The centre is located in an old building, with wide doorways and corridors. However, we have no access to the first floor apart from stairs and no specific facilities in dormitories. We do have one disabled bathroom on the ground floor and one wide access toilet in the girls main shared toilet. Staff are not SEN qualified. Individuals needs should be discussed with the Head of Centre with initial enquiries.

St Michael’s is located in the village of Hathersage, in the Hope Valley, in the heart of the Peak District National Park. Schools can take advantage of its special location. Village amenities are a short walk away.
