Ancient Greek Workshops
An in-school workshop (outreach) on the history of the Ancient Greeks brings a dynamic hands-on learning experience directly to your classroom. Instead of a traditional external school trip, experienced historical trained professionals arrive with all the necessary materials to transform your school hall or classroom into a vibrant historical setting. Students actively participate in a variety of engaging activities designed to make history come alive, providing not just a textbook experience. These workshops can also be interlinked to your curriculum/topic and study needs.
A significant part of the workshop is interactive and hands-on engagement. Pupils often get the chance to act as archaeologists, handling replica and sometimes genuine artifacts like pottery shards, coins, or ancient weapons to study the daily life and culture of the time. They may also engage in role-playing, dressing up as ancient Greeks to perform scenes from famous myths or historical events of this fascinating period, or to understand the origins of Greek theatre by learning about masks and costumes. This immersive approach allows students to personally connect with historical figures and concepts.
These outreach learning workshops provide a physical and creative experience to provide a comprehensive understanding of ancient
Greek society. Students might learn about military tactics like the phalanx formation by practicing with foam spears and shields, gaining insight into the discipline of a hoplite soldier. To explore everyday life, they may also participate in various crafts, such as making mosaics, writing on wax tablets with a stylus, or playing traditional Greek board games. These activities allow pupils to experience the culture and lasting legacy of ancient Greece, including the birth of democracy and the origins of the Olympic Games, right within their own school grounds.
