Gorge Walking & Canyoning
Both gorge walking and canyoning are outdoor activities that are engaging, enriching, challenging, fun and educational for students to experience on a school trip, students will learn outside of the classroom in the natural environment on an outdoor pursuit that takes place within a river valley, waterfall or a steep-sided gorge located in mountainous wild rugged landscapes located in areas such as Brecon Beacons National Park, Snowdonia Wales, Yorkshire Dales, Peak District, Highlands of Scotland and Dartmoor National Park. While both involve navigating a watercourse that requires mental and physical teamworking skills, they differ in their specific challenges they offer for personal development. Gorge walking, or ghyll scrambling, is generally a less technical, upstream journey where students primarily use their physical abilities to clamber over rocks, wade through water, and slide down natural slides, focusing on teamwork and building confidence in a natural setting. In contrast, canyoning is a more demanding, downstream descent that incorporates technical skills like abseiling (rappelling) down waterfalls, which requires students to learn and use specialized safety equipment under strict guidance from fully qualified experienced outdoor adventure centre activity instructors. This more advanced activity emphasizes problem-solving, attention to detail, and a greater level of trust in both instructors and peers within a team, both these adventure experiences offer a significant sense of learning as mental and physical abilities will be tested. Together, these pursuits provide a comprehensive experience in outdoor education, blending essential enrichment life learning skills in a memorable school trip adventure to be remembered.
