Some of the most important things a student learns at school happen away from the classroom.

Your students will take part in activities led by qualified instructors, from climbing and bushcraft to low ropes and archery. It’s hands-on from the moment you arrive.

Forest School

Feel inspired by nature. Forest School involves regular visits to local areas of woodland. Here children can develop a connection with, and appreciation of, their environment. They’ll enjoy complete freedom – to be creative and explore. They’ll also be able to flex their imagination and to play, and to learn using natural materials and tools in new and exciting surroundings. Our commitment to environmental and outdoor learning is long-standing. We played a leading role in the development of Forest Schools in Essex and are active members of the Forest School Association as well as the Essex Learning Outside the Classroom forum. Our experienced instructors can also offer environmental education sessions to support your delivery of the national curriculum, either at our centres or in your school setting. Topics are available at EYFS, KS1 & KS2.

Revision breaks

Danbury pairs outdoor challenge with on-site classroom space, an established offer schools already build into their term calendar for study breaks. Students get a genuine physical reset through climbing, archery or low ropes and then bring that energy back indoors for structured learning. Recharge and refocus without losing that valuable teaching time.

Team building

We deliver team building through real physical challenge. Groups tackle problem-solving activities, low ropes and obstacle courses led by qualified instructors, encouraging genuine communication and shared decision-making under the right amount of pressure. This works for student groups as well as staff away days.

Field studies

Our woodland setting in the heart of Essex turns field studies into direct observation. Students explore habitats, identify species and study ecosystems firsthand, bringing classroom biology, geography of environment studies into what’s growing and living around them. It’s a chance to bring to life your curriculum in an established woodland environment.

Our centres are inspected and approved by the Adventurous Activities Licensing Authority (AALA) and hold the Learning outside the classroom (LOtC) Quality Badge, ensuring we maintain the highest standards of safety and delivery in the industry.

Up to 250 for activities. Up to 450 residential.

Camping and indoor rooms. Our indoor accommodation is for 146 young people plus 28 adults / staff in rooms. There’s space for an additional 250 in tents.

All our activity instructors are first aid trained and will assist you in the event of any emergency.

We have a conference room which comfortably accommodates a class of up to 30.

Whether you’re staying overnight or visiting for the day, our catering team serves delicious meals in a welcoming environment.

Making sure every student can take part is something we take seriously. Our staff carry disability awareness training from the Calvert Trust, so they’re equipped to adapt an activity on the day rather than simply offering a stripped-back version of it.

Our buildings and accommodation are accessible, and we have specialist equipment including hoists, adapted wet rooms, all-terrain wheelchairs, and adapted bikes, so the practical side is covered too.

We’re Essex Outdoors, part of Essex County Council, running four residential and activity centres across the county at Bradwell, Danbury, Harlow, and Mersea. We’ve been giving young people the chance to try adventurous activities in the outdoors for over 50 years.
