Kayaking, obstacle courses and paddleboarding are among 20+ adventurous activities, led by qualified instructors. For residentials, choose from our residential centre, Colne or Blackwater cabins or a mixture of cabins for staff and tents for the students depending on budget and what suits your group.

Essex Outdoors Mersea’s coastal location make it an ideal escape for residential and day visits. Our magical island setting is close to Colchester and just 90 minutes from London.

Revision breaks

Mersea pairs outdoor challenge with on-site classroom space, an established offer schools already build into their term calendar for study breaks. Students get a genuine physical reset through archery, adventure courses or zip wire and then bring that energy back indoors for structured learning. Recharge and refocus without losing that valuable teaching time.

Field studies

Mersea’s estuary setting turns coastal discovery into hands-on field study. Students explore tidal habitats, examine marine life and investigate how the Blackwater’s ecosystem changes with the tide. Surrounding marshes and beaches make the ideal environment for shore-based studies and there is access by boat to local creeks and areas of special scientific interest. Led by qualified instructors, it brings your curriculum to life on an Essex shoreline.

Team building

We deliver team building through real physical challenge. Groups tackle problem-solving activities, low ropes, team challenges and obstacle courses led by qualified instructors, encouraging genuine communication and shared decision-making under the right amount of pressure. This works for student groups as well as staff away days.

Our centres are inspected and approved by the Adventurous Activities Licensing Authority (AALA) and hold the Learning outside the classroom (LOtC) Quality Badge, ensuring we maintain the highest standards of safety and delivery in the industry.

Indoor accommodation for 216, split across cabin and dormitory accommodation. Additional tented accommodation for 300 available.

All our activity instructors are first aid trained and will assist you in the event of any emergency.

We have a conference room which comfortably accommodates a class of up to 30.

Room features:

• Large TV screens for presentations
• Tea and coffee making facilities
• Customisable layouts for meetings and training
• Separate toileting facilities

We are also able to offer further teaching spaces for revision residentials, with up to 4 separate areas available. We can also offer a large hall area with a capacity of around 200 for team away days or whole group collaboration.

From simple packed lunches and warming evening meals for our group bookings, through to delicious buffets or sit-down banquets for events, our dedicated catering team can provide high quality, affordable meals to suit any visit to us.

For group bookings, breakfast, lunch and dinner is served in the main dining room. We are also able to provide packed lunches and an evening barbeque in your village area, if booked prior to arrival.

We are happy to cater for many dietary requirements as specified by culture, religion and medical concerns.

Making sure every student can take part is something we take seriously. Our staff carry disability awareness training from the Calvert Trust, so they’re equipped to adapt an activity on the day rather than simply offering a stripped-back version of it.

Our buildings and accommodation are accessible, and we have specialist equipment including hoists, adapted wet rooms, all-terrain wheelchairs, and adapted bikes, so the practical side is covered too.

We’re Essex Outdoors, part of Essex County Council, running four residential and activity centres across the county at Bradwell, Danbury, Harlow, and Mersea. We’ve been giving young people the chance to try adventurous activities in the outdoors for over 50 years.
