What we offer on a school trip

At the heart of the World Heritage Site of Bath is The Roman Baths. On an educational visit you can:
– walk on 2000-year-old-pavements
– explore the Great Bath, an ancient Roman bathing pool, and the remains of other baths
– watch projections bring the Roman gym to life
– see the ruins of the Temple of Minerva and the gilt-bronze head of the goddess
– see the only hot springs in the UK.
– bring history to life through immersive teaching sessions that dive deep into Roman daily life and the rich history of this ancient site.
At the Roman Baths Clore Learning Centre students will be able to handle original artefacts and have a go at being archaeologists, excavating and researching their finds.
Our popular virtual sessions bring our museum experts directly into your classroom.
Whether you’re joining us on-site at the Roman Baths or online with a virtual session, our team of museum experts is here to guide you.
Free visits and learning sessions are available to UK schools, where 30% or more of pupils receive free school meals. See website for more information.

What makes us a great choice for educational groups

Walk where Romans walked – on a visit to the Roman Baths you will walk on ancient, 2000-year-old pavements. Our visitors enjoy getting up close and personal with our costumed characters, listening to our children’s audio guides and exploring our special site with our leaning resources.
A highlight of the Roman Baths Clore Learning Centre is a pioneering new learning space called the Investigation Zone – an atmospheric underground environment set amidst real Roman remains. Here, children explore, investigate and record archaeological finds in a hands-on way, becoming mini-archaeologists and mini-curators as they participate in learning sessions amongst real Roman archaeology.
Accreditation and Awards

LOtC Quality Badge and Sandford Award for Heritage Education.

Testimonials

“This is our first visit since your move to the Roman Baths Clore learning centre and with a dedicated learning team. It really enhanced the experience. I have been running trips to Bath for nearly 20 years and this was the most successful one yet in terms of student engagement and experience.” (Solihull School, Jan 2024)
“The teaching session was really well pitched and challenged the pupils while keeping them amused – they are year 9 which can be pretty challenging, so thank you! The site as ever is great!” (Exeter School, June 2024)
“The staff were AMAZING! So knowledgeable, enthusiastic, patient, flexible and welcoming. We have two wheelchair users and the staff planned the day so that the rest of the children wouldn’t be waiting around for the lifts and there was a raised digging opportunity so that the wheelchair users could explore the artefacts too! Brilliant.” (Peasedown St John Primary School. October 2024)
“Our sessions in the Clore Centre were fabulous, being able to actually have a go at excavating, searching and matching and attempting to build and test meant the children were really invested in what they learnt […] investigating real artefacts, just topped it all off perfectly.” (Winsley Primary School, December 2024)
“They learnt how archaeologists learn from their discoveries. The staff were full of enthusiasm, the timings just right and the activities engaging – seriously: don’t change a thing about the sessions” (King’s Gate Primary School. November 2024)
