YMCA Lakeside has unveiled an exciting new offer with the launch of the Spell Garden, a creative outdoor project inspired by The Lost Words and The Lost Spells by Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris. Designed to re-wild the language of childhood and reconnect young people with nature, the Spell Garden transforms Macfarlane’s spell-poems into immersive garden spaces that support wellbeing, confidence and connection.

Created in partnership with garden and landscape designer Nicola Hills, artists, and young people themselves, the first space — the Kingfisher Garden — is now open beside the lakeshore. Featuring an engraved oak bench, sculptural artwork and vibrant planting, the garden captures the energy and brilliance of the kingfisher while offering a calm, reflective space for visitors.

Further Spell Garden spaces are planned, including a Nocturnal Garden and an Otter Garden. Groups and schools can incorporate the Spell Garden into their visits. To find out more, visit the YMCA Lakeside website or contact the bookings team directly.
