What we offer on a school trip educational tour


Canterbury Guided Tours offer entertaining 90-minute walking tours for visiting groups to this historical part of Kent. Explore the heart of Canterbury, surrounded by Roman walls, and discover the sights and sounds of this ancient city, full of history and medieval charm.
Tour highlights may include; The Buttermarket, Butchery Lane, The King’s Mile, The King’s Bridge (including the infamous Ducking Stool!), the murder of Thomas Becket, the grounds of King’s School (the oldest in the country), and the iconic ‘crooked house’. Each tour will also journey around the outside of the magnificent Cathedral.
Every tour is tailored to the group’s requirements and will be created specifically for the age group and study programme, if required. This can be in the form of our Themed Tour option which can include tour topics such as; Romans, Tudors, Canterbury Tales, War Time Canterbury, Literary Connections, among many others! Your tour can be arranged at a day and time to suit your school group’s schedule and itinerary.
Our Guides are all aware of how to keep the attention of young people, speaking loudly and clearly and using humour and gesture as much as possible.

What is typically included on your school trip guided tours


Standard city tours are 90-minutes and take in the central medieval lanes and historic Cathedral Precincts, and cover a broad history from the origins of Canterbury, through Roman, Tudor and Medieval periods to current day, looking at historic buildings and architecture, with stories of pilgrimage and famous characters who have lived or visited Canterbury, including notable figures such as Thomas Becket, Geoffrey Chaucer and Christopher Marlowe.
Themed tours are also available, for example:
- Costumed Canterbury Tales – including an interactive storytelling of The Pardoner’s Tale and group participation in a re-enactment of the killing of St Thomas
- Foreign Language Study Tours – aimed at students studying French, German, Spanish or Italian. Tours will be tailored to the ability of the group and the educational level, from “easy/slow” with some English translation if necessary, to more comprehensive & technical for fluent students. Connections to the country of language study can be included.
- History of Health – an insight into health, diseases, water and sanitation in medieval Canterbury
- Roman Canterbury – discover more about the Roman town, just meters below Canterbury’s surface, some of which can still be seen today.
- Tudor Canterbury – the city before and after the Reformation.
- Medieval Canterbury – Canterbury from the Anglo-Saxons to the Tudors. Discover what medieval life was like, and delve into our history’s most catastrophic century …the 14th century
- A Walk Through WWII – Blitzed Bits – A fascinating tour focusing on Canterbury’s areas affected by the Second World War, and the resulting changes of building and landscape

Tours operate every day, except Christmas Day. Tours can be booked between 9am and 6pm (although it will be dark for late afternoon tours in winter)
