Orangutans cooling down in Monkey World – Ape Rescue Centre

During the recent hot weather, the keepers at Monkey World – Ape Rescue Centre have been coming up with novel ways to ensure the rescued and endangered primates stay hydrated by providing exciting treats, such as giant ice lollies for Tuan’s group of Bornean orangutans! The ice lollies are made of diluted sugar-free squash, with nuts and fruits frozen within too for extra incentives. As orangutans are arboreal apes, the ice lollies are hung up high and secured with fire hose to mimic natural climbing and feeding. This requires a whole team effort! The orangutans seem to really enjoy the frozen treats, and dominant male Tuan showed his soft side when he allowed females Mimi and RoRo to share his lolly! Many of the orangutans are at Monkey World after rescue from the illegal wildlife trade, having been smuggled out of the rainforests as infants for the illegal pet trade or tourist entertainment industries. It’s wonderful to see them enjoying their time together at the park.

Monkey World is a self-funded internationally renowned primate rescue centre, working with governments across the globe for the past 38 years to stop the illegal wildlife trade. Visitors to the park help to fund the centre’s work. Monkey World is open every day, except for Christmas Day.
