Headmaster Mike Kane of ESMS Junior School says organising residential trips is “a big decision” made each year, with four year groups attending camp. The wants every cohort to enjoy an experience that is even more exciting and adventurous than the last. Mike says YMCA Lakeside impressed from the outset. Staff embraced the school’s goals and provided age-appropriate challenges for 11 and 12-year-olds.
Activities were as varied as a giant stand-up paddleboard to encourage pupils to work together and step outside their comfort zones plus a land-based woodland cookout. Pupils worked with instructors and a teacher to build campfires, prepare food, chop vegetables and play games together. These practical activities developed confidence, teamwork and valuable life skills while helping children connect with nature.
A defining feature of the visit was the school’s decision to introduce a complete digital detox for children. Pupils left their phones and devices at home, removing the distractions of Netflix, social media and messaging apps. Instead they immersed themselves in conversations, games and shared adventures. Teacher Mairi Grant said pupils loved simply spending time with their friends – chatting, laughing and playing together throughout the trip.
