Bournemouth Writing Festival’s FREE dog-themed writing competition

(Get your entries in before Sunday 15th March 2026)

Open to schools and home-educated children in Dorset, the Bournemouth Writing Festival’s FREE dog-themed writing competition aims to inspire kids to write about their four-legged friends.

With free classroom resources and a video from our charity partner Waggy Tails Rescue to get you going, we want to see poems and short stories about finding a loving home for their dogs.

Hengistbury Head writers’ group will be judging the entries.

Winners will receive prizes, a certificate and an invitation to a special celebration event during the Bournemouth Writing Festival in April, where a few furry friends may be making an appearance!

The Bournemouth Writing Festival has over 100 writing events and activities during the three-day festival 24-26 April, for all ages, abilities and backgrounds. On Saturday 25th April, Patch will have free drop-in sessions and ticketed workshops just for children.

Celebration will take place at Patch, 1 st floor Bobbys department store.
