What we offer on a school trip
Many different adventure activities are available and we can package them in different ways to suit your budget, curriculum aims and group size.
We have our own lakes and grounds where watersports (canoeing, kayaking, raft building), gorge scrambling, climbing, cycling, bushcraft, low ropes, high ropes, archery and many other activities can be sampled; further afield you can also try out mountain boarding, mountain biking, surfing, bodyboarding and pony trekking.
For other curriculum areas, we offer various activities such as River Study, Pond Safari, Quarry Quest, Museum of Dartmoor Life visit, Okehampton Castle Visit, so that you can add a sense of place to their visit to Dartmoor, contrasting with your own town.
Attractions close by: the residential venue is suitable for overnight stays when visiting the Eden Project, Education Centre at the Royal Horticultural Society Gardens at Rosemoor, Dartmoor Zoo, Dartmoor Pony Heritage Centre, Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Exeter, National Aquarium at Plymouth, as well as various National Trust properties close by (Castle Drogo, Finch Foundry). Many of these centres offer free educational visits, if booked in advance.
We offer schools and groups an opportunity to tailor their an activity programme to their own requirements, so whatever your budget we can find a suitable package for your needs.

Accreditation and Awards
We are AALA registered, and have well-trained, fun instructors that provide a safe, fun way to learn new activities. We also are accredited by Council of Learning Outside the Classroom and British Canoe Union. We are affiliated to the Youth Hostel Association, so you know that our accommodation meets their high standards.

What is typically included on our school trips?
A variety of programmes are available on our web-site. We offer a range of different activities, which are aimed can be modified for the target audience: primary schools, middle schools, secondary schools, colleges, university groups.
Some activities combine well to run as a full adventure day (e.g. Rock Climbing and Gorge Scrambling; High Ropes and Bushcraft, Archery and Low Ropes/Climbing Wall) with an option of a packed lunch provided. Typically programmes include a range of on-site activities such as climbing, archery, cycling, team building as well as activities on the moors (navigation, orienteering, walking, gorge scrambling) and at the watersports sites (Kayaking, canoeing, raft-building). Some programmes can include an overnight expedition onto the moor.
These sessions for activities require a minimum number of participants. Please ask for an individual quote in this case.
Our Young Leaders course was designed for the Rotary Young leaders award, and incorporates team challenges including an overnight expedition, so is suitable for the National Citizenshp Scheme.
Group Sizes Catered For
For Residential Activity packages up to 180.
For Adventure Activity packages 6 to 180. These are for local groups or those staying at other venues in close proximity. We offer a mini-bus pick-up service.
Materials, Resources & Information Provided
Parents Evenings: We have a Powerpoint presentation and Video for you to show the parents at your school.
Teacher Resources: We have links on our web-site to various teacher packs prepared for different academic worksheets that you can use for preparation for a visit, as well as some worksheets for some activities.
Photography, Filming & Audio Restrictions
We are happy for the children to take photos or videos of their trip, but let the Schools decide whether they want the children to take photographs. Some teachers do the photography for the entire school whereas other schools get a blanket permission from all parents and we get a photographer to take photographs for them. We cannot assume responsibility for valuable items such as cameras, phones etc.
Risk Assessment Details
Teachers that make a booking will be provided with a risk assessment pack for their chosen package.
Teachers are welcome to visit the centre prior to their visit, to check the facilities and view the activity venues.
For residential stays, Adventure Okehampton recommend that there must be one adult leader for each sex if it is a mixed group, in a ratio of at least 1:15, and preferably 1:10. We accept teaching assistants, parents or guardians as sub-leaders, where there is a qualified leader assigned to each sex. We recommend that you check the leader ratios suggested by your outdoor education advisor.

One member of staff has a teaching qualification (PGCE) and has taught in secondary schools, and can assist with the tailoring sessions for a more academic content, where required.

For any booking which includes Full Board, there is one free supervising adult for every 10 children.
Clothing Requirements
A recommended kit list is provided to all of schools and will vary depending on the nature of the adventure activity package taken.

All our instructors are qualified first aiders but we would recommend that any large group bring their own qualified first aider.

As a small family run Company we pride ourselves on delivering high quality adventure activities for groups of all sizes. We have a wide range of groups that regularly visit us from UK, France, Denmark and Poland and we consider that their feedback is vital in improving the quality of our delivery. We have started to add more academic elements for groups in response to this feedback.
