What we offer on a school trip
At Techniquest Science Discovery Centre in Cardiff Bay, pupils will be inspired by more than 120 hands-on exhibits, which are ideal for child-centred learning and investigation.
Key Stage 2 pupils who visit Techniquest can also attend an interactive show in the Science Theatre, or visit Techniquest's digital Planetarium, where they will be inspired by a view of the night sky. KS2 pupils can also take part in a series of workshops to gain hands-on practical experience.
Literacy and Numeracy Teaching Support for Key Stage 2
Whether you visit for a Show, Workshop or the Planetarium, pupils will benefit from additional activities which support the teaching of literacy and numeracy, and provide structured learning on the exhibition floor to assist with the development of key skills.
Pupils take part in a Literacy and Numeracy Trail, developed in conjunction with teachers, carrying out mathematical tasks and literacy challenges which involve investigation and exploration at key exhibits. Guidance notes are provided for pupils, with additional support for teachers and assistants.
All Foundation Phase programmes cover the seven areas of learning, providing a balance between presenter-directed learning and child-initiated activities. The programmes are presented with the help of Delyth, a cheeky and inquisitive young dragon, who is on hand to answer questions and inspire pupils in science and mathematics.
For Foundation Phase, each programme consists of a Science Theatre show, time on the exhibition floor amongst the 120 hands-on exhibits, plus post-visit materials, thereby offering teachers a complete package of activities to support their teaching.
Each lively presentation in the Science Theatre lasts approximately 25 minutes, after which pupils explore the exhibition floor. Here they are guided by their own curiosity, and engage with a variety of interactive exhibits that encourage them to experiment
Please see the website for details of Techniquest's School Membership Scheme which allows all pupils at Foundation Phase and KS2 (Reception to Year 6) to have free admission to all Science Theatre and Planetarium Shows during school visits to Techniquest, for 12 months from the date of enrolment.
We welcome teachers visiting Techniquest, free of charge, any time during opening hours, to help in planning their visit - just advise our staff at the admissions desk when you arrive. They will be happy to process your free entry.
