RSPB Old Moor Nature Reserve is home to a wealth of wildlife, including ducks, geese and swans! Here, students can explore different habitats and study animals in their natural environment.

What we offer on a school trip
Once famous for its coal mining, this stunning area of reclaimed SSSI wetland now teems with wildlife. Home to rare breeding species such as Bittern and Marsh Harrier, in the summer we see the return of hundreds of waders, swifts, swallows and the winter offers safe passage to thousands of migrating birds.
We have a range of excellent facilities such as a private indoor classroom, visitor centre a range of superb education resources, including pond dipping platforms, stunning sensory garden and new lottery funded, child friendly, Lookout, which offers an interactive experience, where schools can learn about habitats and the species which live there.
Our reserve offers a broad range of habitats to study including meadows, woodlands, wetlands and ponds. A visit to Old Moor also provides a great opportunity for pupils take a closer look at the Dearne Valley’s fascinating wildlife. This is ideal place to bring your class for an unforgettable, first-hand experience of nature which bringing learning to life.

Our sessions are linked to the curriculum and take place in our wonderful meadows, bird hides and ponds for nature. Visiting teachers are invited to subscribe to our e-newsletter which contains useful projects and teacher blogs to support continued work outside the classroom.

Group Sizes
Groups of 30 per session. 60 is maximum capacity for the site due to limited toilet facilities and classroom size.

Clothing Requirements
Although we have a classroom, our sessions are held outdoors so we recommend students are dressed appropriately for the weather. This may be waterproof boots and raincoats, or it may be sunhats and sunblock cream.
First Aid
RSPB Learning staff are first aid trained to Appointed Persons status and will carry a basic first aid kit.

We have an onsite shop, café, toilets, and private classroom facility. Parking for coaches available.

Disabled toilet facilities available and the reserve is fully accessible for wheelchair users.
