What we offer on a school trip
Immerse your class in an unforgettable hands-on learning experience with an educational school visit to our fabulous nature reserve at RSPB Conwy. Our sessions are led by RSPB education professionals who are specialists in their field and our sessions are suitable for children of all abilities.
Today’s nature reserve was created from material dug out during the building of the A55 road tunnel to create the ideal wetland environment for local wildlife. RSPB Conwy is a mosaic of freshwater lagoons, grassland, reedbed, young woodland and wildlife gardens with the Conwy Estuary to the far right of the reserve and a view of the wild and majestic Carneddau mountains in the distance.
We have a range of facilities such as an indoor classroom and visitor centre. Our pond dipping area will allow students to delve under the surface of the water to discover the secretive creatures below. The minibeast discovery area offers the fantastic opportunity to get up close to all things creepy crawly. Finally, as we wander around the reserve, the students can see the beautiful show of colour from our native plant life and visit our hides and viewing screens to catch glimpses of migrating woodland and wetland birds and if they are lucky, an elusive otter or stoat.
We aim to engage and inspire learners from nursery age to A-level in investigating and exploring the natural world around them. Our sessions are varied and well-paced and aim to get pupils working scientifically and using technical vocabulary in context. We also aim to build pupils’ resilience and character through our fun and active sessions. All sessions are aligned to the National curriculum and cover areas such as: identifying plants and animals in their local environment, using comparison and classification skills, adaptation, habitats, food chains, migration, life cycles and much, much more.
Suggestions are also made for potential ongoing learning back in the classroom.
We also welcome bookings from uniformed and youth groups and can tailor your visit to suit your needs.
Each programme is designed to last two hours. Sessions run from 10am to 12pm and then 12.30 to 2.30pm. Two programmes can be combined to make a whole-day visit.
What makes us a great choice for educational groups
Our sessions are linked to the curriculum and take place in our wonderful haven for nature which is an ideal site for geography and science fieldwork.
Conwy Nature Reserve is rich in wildlife, with a huge variety of plants, minibeasts, birds and mammals for your pupils to discover. The range of habitats means that we can provide investigative fieldwork and experience led programmes to suit your group’s needs and creates a memorable learning experience.
Visiting teachers are invited to subscribe to our e-newsletter which contains useful projects and teacher blogs to support continued work outside the classroom.
