What we offer on a school trip
At the heart of the World Heritage Site of Bath is The Roman Baths. On an educational visit you can see the ruins of the Temple of Minerva, visit the bath-house where people bathed nearly 2000 years ago and see the only hot springs in the UK.
The Roman Baths is a favourite for children and their teachers studying the Romans and Roman Britain. Children can work with original Roman material in our dedicated learning space. At the Roman Baths Clore Learning Centre students will be able to handle original
artefacts and have a go at being archaeologists, excavating and researching their finds.
What makes us a great choice for educational groups
Walk where Romans walked – on a visit to the Roman Baths you will walk on ancient, 2000 year old pavements. Our visitors enjoy getting up close and personal with our costumed characters, listening to our children’s audio guides and exploring our special site with our leaning resources.
A highlight of the Roman Baths Clore Learning Centre is a pioneering new learning space called the Investigation Zone – an atmospheric underground environment set amidst real Roman remains. Here, children are able to explore, investigate and record archaeological materials in a hands-on way, becoming mini-archaeologists and mini-curators as they participate in learning sessions amongst real Roman archaeology.
Accreditation and Awards
LOtC Quality Badge and Sandford Award for Heritage Education.
What is typically included on our school trips
We offer a range of teaching sessions focused on Roman daily life, with opportunities to handle Roman objects from the museum’s collection and investigate historical sources. All sessions are linked closely to the curriculum and cover Roman bathing, religion and belief, Latin language, and life in Roman Britain.
Our sessions cater for every age range and ability, from Early Years to A-Level and Adult learners. See our website for more information. These sessions are delivered from the Roman Baths, directly linking teaching with the archaeological site and its collections. All are linked closely to the National Curriculum and exam criteria.
We are also continuing to run our popular virtual sessions, bringing our museum experts directly into your classroom. Sessions include ‘A Roman Adventure’ for Primary Schools and ‘Investigate Aquae Sulis’ for secondary schools.
