What we offer on a school trip?
Our costumed hands-on educational activity days bring history into the here and now by providing unique immersive experiences for pupils, linked closely to Key Stage Two of the History curriculum:
- Prehistoric
- Roman
- Viking/Saxon
- Homefront
The aim is for children (and often accompanying adults) to be fully immersed in the past through roleplay and taking part in a range of award-winning activities related to the time period being studied.

What makes you a great choice for educational visits?
- Murton Park is home to a range of recreated historical outdoor classrooms including a prehistoric village, Roman Fort and Viking Village.
- Each Living History Interpreter will be dressed as historical costumed characters, appropriate to the period of history being taught.
- Each day is fully immersive, children will live the life and do the jobs of people from the past.
- Staff expertise
- The Living History team – known as Living History Interpreters – at Murton Park have a wealth of experience, knowledge and formal qualifications in both education and teaching as well as history.
- The staff also have a range of interests and specialisms in history, which means they can share their skills and research to ensure that their teaching is up to date and relevant to the evolving curriculum.
- ALL STAFF INVOLVED IN THE DELIVERY OF OUR EDUCATION PROGRAMMES HAVE AN ENHANCED DBS CHECK.
Accreditation and Awards
Murton Park was one of the first organisations nationally to be awarded the Learning Outside the Classroom Quality badge and has been awarded three prestigious Sandford Awards for excellence in heritage education in 2010, 2015 and 2022.
What is typically included on your school trips relating to Key Stage or Curriculum Topic information?
The learning objectives for each educational day are:
Prehistoric
- Evolution of man – Paleolithic through too late Neolithic hunter-gatherers and early farmers
- Chronology
- Stone age and bronze age technology, life, and rituals
- Development of settlement and tribal identity across stone age
Roman
- Learning about life as a Roman in the military.
- Differentiation between Roman roles.
Viking
- Learn about life as a Viking settler.
- Viking society and different roles.
- 6 aspects of being a Viking – Sailor, raider, trader, settler, farmer, craftsmen
Homefront
- Learn about life on the Homefront of the second world war
- Investigate different roles and activities from an ARP warden and an Evacuation Officer.
Saxon
- Life as a Saxon Settler
- Saxon settlement transition to Viking invasion
Group Sizes
- Viking/Saxon, Roman: up to 65 children with four free adult places (or 1 free adult place per 10 children)
- Prehistoric and Homefront: up to 36 children with four free adult places

Is specific clothing required?
All our educational days take place outside so appropriate footwear/warm layers/sunhats/sunscreen are required. Days will go ahead no matter the weather.
First Aid
We have first aid stations across all the sites.
We ask that schools bring a qualified first aider as part of their group.
