What we offer

Tyneside Cinema is an award-winning independent cinema and arts venue based in Newcastle city centre.

Designed with the help of teachers, our one-day school filmmaking workshops for Key Stage 2 - 5 are a brilliant way to engage students with the demands of the curriculum in a fun and creative way, preparing them for their coursework and contributing towards their qualifications.

Each workshop explores a range of curriculum links and helps develop and extend students' understanding of the subject and ability to engage with it in a number of ways.

They are also highly effective at developing confidence, communication skills and ability to work as part of a team.

Our workshops can be themed around a topic such as The Movie Business, The Newsreel, Film Trailers, Music Videos or Animation - Old And New: alternatively we can tailor workshops to your students' learning requirements.

Workshops are based at our Pop-Up Film School in central Newcastle, just across the road from Tyneside Cinema. This dedicated space for playful adventures in filmmaking is packed full of professional quality filmmaking and editing equipment.

Areas Visited

Our workshops for schools are based at our dedicated Pop-Up Film School? in central Newcastle, across the road from Tyneside Cinema, but we are happy to visit schools across the region to deliver roadshows to students and/or teachers.

Our roadshows for teachers focus on the educational benefits of our work and the CPD support we can offer teachers and lecturers, and we suggest scheduling these at lunchtime or after the school day has finished.

Our roadshows for students focus on the fun elements of a visit to Tyneside Cinema - we suggest scheduling these as part of a school assembly.

Group Sizes Catered For

Our workshops are suitable for groups of up to 30 students at a time.

Our recommended number of adults to bring depends on the number of students in your group. For groups of around 30 we split them into three separate crews and it's good to have an adult for each group. Attending adults don?t need to know anything about film or filming but as far as is reasonable we expect them to be in charge of discipline. For toileting and any first aid it helps to have a mix of genders, if possible.

Materials, Resources & Information Provided

When you make your booking we will provide you with a general hazard identification form. This will be accompanied by a specific risk assessment for the workshop you are going to take part in, if there are any significant additional risks involved.

Activity in our Pop-Up Film School may involve some basic health and safety risks which we will always aim to keep to a minimum. The workshop facilitator will begin the day with a health and safety briefing which will cover any risks and how to help minimise them.

For some of our workshops we have specific resources that can help you to prepare for your visit, or consolidate your learning when you go back to school. We will include these with your confirmation email, where appropriate.

Teachers are welcome to make a preliminary visit to Pop-Up Film School: just get in touch with the Learning and Participation team either via email () or by phone (0191 227 5508) and we?ll try and arrange for a tour around the Pop-Up Film School for you where we can answer any further questions you might have.

Photography, Filming & Audio Restrictions

There are no restrictions on children taking photos, video or audio during our workshops, though we hope of course that groups spend their day on the core filmmaking activity rather than simply taking photos, as this will be more beneficial and more fun!

Additionally, if a specific school or group has restrictions on taking photos of individual students, for instance due to safeguarding sensitivities, we are happy to accommodate this.

Testimonials

Read some testimonials from teachers and students:

?This workshop was amazing - one child genuinely said that it was his favourite school day ever...The children have absolutely loved it and more than that, they have learned a whole host of skills?
Teacher at Wellfield School in North Tyneside

?The visit helped my students to make a real connection from their A Level project to the commercial world of movie promotion and marketing...All of the students I spoke to during and after the event were enthusiastic about their visit.
Lecturer at Newcastle Sixth Form College

?It's good to have enrichment activity like this where students can come and experience working as part of a team and having a bit of fun. It's great to see the students collaborating effectively and developing technical skills beyond what I think they would do in the time given at school?
Dan Bowen, head of Media Studies at Kenton School.

?I?d done things at school like this but I?d never done things quite on the same scale and quite as professionally?
Student at Kenton School

?It's better than sitting in the classroom and watching things being done - we actually got to do it ourselves. This is a much better day than normal school!?
Student at Kenton School
