What we offer
Our courses are aimed at giving pupils a taster of challenging, exciting and interesting activities that will shape their future memories.
Simonsbath House Outdoor Centre is situated in the heart of Exmoor National Park being part of the oldest house in Exmoor Forest; the property dates back to 1654 and still retains many of its original features. The main house is set in 4 acres of land where many of the centre activities take place and adjoins Exmoor National Park overlooking the Barle Valley, a unique acidic upland river with SSSI designation and immediate access to acres of beautiful moorland countryside.
As well as providing an excellent location for habitat investigation, the centre offers an exciting range of outdoor activities such as:
Mountain biking, climbing wall, tree climb, assault course, archery, group development through problem solving , mountain boarding, grass sledging, map work, compass and orienteering, stream scramble, circus workshop and slack line, climbing traverse and boulder, up and over team challenge wall, camp craft skills including shelter building, woodland survival games and camouflage and Indian Tracker, using steels , cooking on an open fire, river study, guided walks and environmental activities.
The Centre is within 7 miles of Watersmeet on the East Lyn River and picturesque Lynmouth with the cliff side railway connecting the town to Lynton. Close by we can offer surfing on the wide sandy beaches of Croyde bay, sailing and kayaking at Wimbleball Lake or a high ropes experience.
The centre offers en-suite dormitory accommodation for approx 45 students and ensuite bedrooms for their leaders. All bedding is provided and bedrooms are centrally heated and fully carpeted. The centre offers a range of indoor facilities including a large dining room and common room and a fully equipped classroom. The centre also has a small souvenir shop and washing and drying facilities.
The experienced chef savours his reputation for good food, providing a wide and varied menu cooked on site using local produce catering for both vegetarians and those on special diets.
The safety and welfare of the residents is of paramount importance, to that end the centre has a dedicated Health and Safety Co-ordinator. All activities are run by qualified and experienced staff and the centre holds £5 million public liability insurance. To ensure the safety and security of our residents the dormitory block has locks on all exterior doors and windows and an alarm system. All staff hold a first aid qualification and there is a member of staff qualified to First Aid at Work standard in residence on site at all times. The Centre Health and Safety Policy, Code of Practice and Risk Assessments are available on request and can be view on our web page www.shoc.info. SHOC meets all criteria required by LEA's to ensure the safety and well being of pupils visiting the centre.
As well as providing an excellent location in central Exmoor for geographical investigations, environmental studies and exciting outdoor adventurous activities the centre offers considerable learning opportunities in all aspects of the curriculum and aims to encompass many areas of Citizenship and PSHE.
Plan a packed programme to include: mountain biking, climbing wall, tree climb, assault course, archery, group development through problem solving , mountain boarding, grass sledging, map work, compass and orienteering, stream scramble, circus workshop and slack line, climbing traverse and boulder, up and over team challenge wall, camp craft skills including shelter building, woodland survival games and camouflage and Indian Tracker, using steels , cooking on an open fire, river study, guided walks and environmental activities.
Evening activities include Morris Dancing, Ukulele or drumming and percussion workshops, up close and personal visit from Exmoor Birds of Prey.
Take a short trip out from the centre to walk the Lyn valley specacular path to Lynmouth or try watersports on Wimbleball lake, surfing at Croyde Bay or High Ropes challenges.
Visit the Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park or Exmoor Zoo
Accreditation and Awards
We are members of The Institute of Outdoor Learning and Learning outside the classroom. We hold a certificate of excellence from Trip Advisor and a Silver award from Green Tourism

Risk Assessment Details
Staff are welcome to visit the centre by appointment. We provide documentation for visiting groups to include a code of practice, positive behaviour and discipline doc and risk assessments. Fire drills are conducted every week.
Accommodation rates depend on the length of stay and the time of year. We offer off peak rates and there are free adults places for every 10 children.

We have a qualified first aid on site at all times
Our package price includes all meals from the evening of arrival to the lunch on the day of departure. Our facilities include a dining room/common room, classroom, yurt for socializing (seasonal) 4 acres of private land with picnic benches.

Room Sizes and Facilities
Our dormitory block is split over two floors and has ensuite shower rooms and bunkbeds accommodating between 4 and 8 pupils. There are twin ensuite staff bedrooms on each floor. Staff bedrooms have telephones, t.v's and there is also a staff lounge with kitchen.
