MONTHS OPENJanuary, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November, December
What we offer
Arvon offers five-day residential writing courses for schools and groups, tutored by two professional authors, and held in historic writing houses in countryside locations. At the heart of Arvon is the desire to encourage anyone, regardless of background, to find their voice through writing; whether you want to bring talented writers, or individuals who need more support, each week is shaped around the participants? needs and interests.
An Arvon week provides a chance to develop writing and language skills, alongside imagination and creativity. The experience can also improve participants? communication skills and self-belief. For many, these five days can be life-changing.
The 19th century building has been given a thoroughly 21st century renovation. All 16 bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms, the main workshop room has a hand crafted table for twenty and a growing library, and a lift gives accessibility to every bedroom. The house sits within 26 acres of woodland, with a spring-fed lake and inspiring walks.
Group Sizes Catered For
The centre can accommodate up to 16 students and two teachers who act in loco parentis.
Risk Assessment Details
A risk assessment for the centre is sent to the school upon booking.
Please get in touch with details about your school or group for up-to-date fee information.
First Aid Information
Centre staff are all first aid trained and are on-site in the day. Emergency contact numbers are provided for adults acting in loco parentis overnight.
We provide lunch for the group each day, and participants take it in turns to cook dinner in groups of four, with the support of the centre staff. Supplies for self-service breakfast are provided. The cost of all food is included in the overall fee.
Outside of workshops and evening readings, the entire centre and grounds are available for participants to find a space to write, talk or arrange additional activities. This includes the main workshop room, the lounge, a seminar room with computers and a projector, the dining room, and other smaller spaces, as well as the gardens and 26 acres of woodland. Each student also has a desk in their bedroom to use for personal writing time.
There is no wi-fi provided for participants and phone reception is poor; however we do have internet access if necessary and a phone for students to contact families. We think this disconnection from communication technology is an important part of the experience, and allows students to leave the usual distractions behind and focus completely on their writing.
Accessibility & Disabled Facilities
The Hurst is fully wheelchair-accessible with a lift accessing all floors. We can fully cater for disabled and deaf writers.
Room Sizes and Facilities
All rooms at The Hurst are single rooms and all are en suite. Each room also has a writing desk and chair for personal writing time.
