A school trip to the NYMR offers a unique environment for learning outside the classroom that will challenge your pupils, and fill them with enthusiasm!

Explore the Railway
Pickering Station is a must-see 1930's themed station that will transport you back in time to the steam era.
A must-see is the celebrity station, Goathland, which became Hogsmeade Station in the first Harry Potter film.
Explore Grosmont Station which is home to the operating and engineering world of the NYMR. If you are lucky you might be able to catch a sneaky peak at the work taking place on our engines!
Visit Whitby with its narrow streets and bustling harbour overlooked by the striking ruins of Whitby Abbey.

What makes us a great choice?

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is to provide memorable experiences for students through the operation of Britain's most popular heritage railway between Whitby and Pickering. A visit to the NYMR will provide a unique environment for your pupils to see, smell and experience the steam era in the heart of the inspiring North York Moors National Park. 
The NYMR cares for operating and developing the railway we own from Pickering to Grosmont. 
Operating over Network Rail from Grosmont to Whitby.

The NYMR is a fully accredited museum with the Museum Libraries and Archives Council (MLA)

And our self- contained Reussner Learning Department facilities, on Platform Two, include Classroom, outdoor learning space/p>icnic area, Visitors Centre with interactive science exhibits, Archives and Reading Room - the ideal place for learning for your school visit.

Group Sizes Catered For

If you want to just travel on the railway we can cater for all size school groups.

Packages (The Last, Steaming through History and Evacuation Experience) are limited to 35 pupils plus teachers as we like to ensure that everyone has a fantastic experience. Have more than this in your class? Contact us and we will try and accommodate your school.

We are more than happy for children to take photos to share their memories with their families.

Risk Assessment Details

We provide a sample risk assessment. This can be downloaded from our website.

We also provide 2 x familiarisation tickets allowing free entry ahead of the school trip date so teachers can complete their own risk assessment. These tickets are released once a provisional booking has been made.

April / May: The Last Train - Students £9.50
June/July: Steaming through History - Students £11.00
Sept/Oct: Evacuation Experience - Students £10.00

One Teacher goes Free with every 10 paying children travelling on the Railway.

Additional Teachers pay standard rail travel:

Clothing Requirements

Suitable clothing and sturdy shoes/trainers are essential. Please come prepared for the weather e.g. warm clothes, waterproofs, sun hats, sun cream and bottles of water as appropriate.

The whole experience was invaluable. The children thoroughly enjoyed it.

The children were spellbound when the Education Officer was presenting.

The re-enactors were wonderful. It made the experience seem real to the children.
