What we offer

Ice skating is a fun experience whatever your age or ability, and where better to give it a go than the National Ice Centre Nottingham. You can skate any day of the week and we have a range of sessions to choose from.

With two Olympic sized ice rinks, students can get away from the classroom and enjoy a unique alternative PE lesson at our venue. Alternatively, ice skating makes for an affordable day out that helps encourage an active lifestyle!

Before you hit the ice you?ll need one essential item - your ice skates! Pick up your skates from the Skate Hire counter, located next to the ice rink on level 1. We have over 1,500 pairs of skates in a variety of sizes from child size 5 to adult size 15. Be aware, on busy sessions demand can be high for skates. You can also buy your own skates from our Ice Locker store which is located on level 2 of the venue alongside the main entrance.

Our schools ice skating programmes have really sparked enthusiasm amongst schools and the local community. We have many children that have continued to pursue their sporting ambitions in ice sports and represent at national and international competitions in ice hockey, speed skating, figure skating and synchronized ice skating.

We also find that children find that new skill and become regular ice skaters during the week and at weekends with their friends and family.

What makes us a great choice?

The National Ice Centre is an iconic venue in the Heart of Nottingham City Centre and accessible for all. It is also home to the GB Olympic Short Track Speed Skating Team, the Nottingham Panthers Ice Hockey Team and the smash hit CBBC show Ice Stars.

Nottingham has a long tradition of ice skating and our venue is famed for being the home of legendary Olympic skating duo Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean as they used to train here. In 2012, the National Ice Centre was one of just a few landmarks through which the Olympic Flame was carried during the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay. Torvill and Dean performed on the ice with the Olympic Flame in an ice gala that was broadcast across the globe.

We?ve been running ice skating programmes especially for schools for over ten years now so our coaches have a vast amount of experience working with and coaching school children. Over 22,000 children have participated and passed our six-week learn to skate programmes over the years.

Accreditation and Awards

Although we do not have this accreditation, our schools learn to skate programme was highlighted by the Youth Sport Trust in 2010 commenting that we used the power of sport to inspire young people to take part in PE or sport who were not yet engaged.

What is typically included?

School groups find ice skating activities to be a fun activity and often as a way to celebrate a milestone within the school curriculum (e.g. Christmas celebrations, end of term or completing exam periods).

Our rink assistants can carry out safety briefings before the skating session begins if required, or there is the opportunity to hire private coaches to teach pupils and teachers to skate if they?re new to ice skating.

We also have a skating programme that is perfect if you are looking for regular trips out with your class or school.

Our 6 week skating programme normally consists of 40 minutes group tuition in learning how to skate and then 20 minutes to put into practice what they have learnt. This is also quality time to socialise, have fun and keep active.

Group Sizes Catered For

Our discounts apply to school groups of 10 or more. For smaller groups, please enquire with the group sales executive Jack Occleshaw on 0115 853 3137.

If you would like something bespoke, you can privately hire the rink and have it all to yourself! This is a great option if you want to invite a large class or the whole school. Along with private rink hire, we can create some team-building activities such as obstacle courses and traditional races around the rink. Please speak to Jack Occleshaw for further information.

Photography, Filming & Audio Restrictions

Photographs can be taken by schools during their time at the National Ice Centre. The person taking the photo must sign our photography and filming policy and provide their personal contact details. In return they will be provided with a sticker identifying them as an authorized person.

Risk Assessment Details

It is the schools responsibility to produce their own risk assessments although we can provide some information to support that element of the visit. Schools are welcome to come and see the venue prior to a visit.

Education Officer Information

We have a Sports Development Officer named Matt Bradbury .Please feel free to contact our group sales executive Jack Occleshaw on 0115 853 3137 for more information.

As part of the Sports Development programme, we offer the six-week schools ice skating programme which consists of six weekly one hour sessions with 35 pupils per session. The sessions are aimed at all abilities and trained by CRB checked and fully qualified staff.

Pricing Information

For school group bookings, we offer a discounted price of just £3.50 per person including skate hire. Our standard price is £8.50 per person so this is a great deal! Plus, for every 10 students that purchase tickets - a teacher can skate free.

Our discounts are regularly used by after school clubs, youth groups and workshops so feel free to let others know about these great offers!

Clothing Requirements

Before you hit the ice you?ll need one essential item - your ice skates! Pick up your skates from the Skate Hire counter, located next to the ice rink on level 1. We have over 1,500 pairs of skates in a variety of sizes from child size 5 to adult size 15. Be aware, on busy sessions demand can be high for skates. You can also buy your own skates from our Ice Locker store which is located on level 2 of the venue alongside the main entrance.

We suggest you wear comfortable, loose fitting warm clothes and cosy socks! Wearing a few layers is a good idea so you can take off or add clothing when you need to. A pair of gloves might also come in useful but this is not essential.

Lower half hockey kit including hockey skates can be worn at any public skating session.

We do not permit scarves during skating as they could fall onto the ice nor do we permit hoods up on jumpers as hoods can limit a skater's view.

Testimonials

Absolutely amazing! I can?t believe the progress the children have made in such a short space of time. The children are excited about the lesson and are determined to achieve. I will try and persuade the Head Teacher to let the children come for longer next year!

The programme ran smoothly and is excellent value for money and totally engaged the children. It gave the children the opportunity to do something they may never get the chance to do.

Well run sessions, well organised, easy sessions with regards to organisation beforehand, gentle encouragement given where required leading to individuals success. Excellent professional coaches, superb sessions from start to finish! A great sport to share with children.
