What we offer
Fuel learning across the curriculum with a visit to the National Coal Mining Museum and give your pupils a unique experience they will never forget.
We offer FREE underground tours for schools led by a miner. Visit our historic colliery buildings and interactive galleries or book an inspiring workshop to provide an immersive learning environment where pupils can:
investigate their local history
find out about coal mining through time
solve a scientific problem and see science in action
be creative and curious
enjoy the great outdoors

What makes us a great choice?
We are the National Coal Mining Museum for England so we offer a totally unique insight into coal mining and local history, bringing stories to life for visitors.
Accreditation and Awards
Yes we have the LOtC Quality Badge.
Group Sizes Catered For
We can accommodate up to 200 pupils per day. Group sizes are usually 17 children : 2 adults.
Materials, Resources & Information Provided
We can provide teacher-led gallery trail sheets tailored for different key stages free of charge. These have been developed with school children in mind by our Learning Team. Classroom resources such as factsheets can also be downloaded from our online Learning pages. Schools locally can borrow our free loans boxes with items from our handling collection.
Photography, Filming & Audio Restrictions
Cameras cannot be taken underground for safety reasons but everyone is welcome to film and record above ground.
Risk Assessment Details
We can provide a risk assessment information sheet to teachers when they book. We recommend that schools who haven?t visited us before undertake a preliminary visit. We can also provide a site map to help guide you around the site.
The Underground Tour is FREE for schools.
Workshops are £25-£50 per group (17 students : 2 adults)
There are other prices available on request for full immersive / bespoke days.
We recommend visitors wear sensible shoes and wrap up warm as the underground tour can be chilly. Also be aware that clothing may get dirty as it is a real coal mine.
First Aid Information
Yes we have first aid trained members of staff all around the site. We ask for any special educational or medical needs in order to make our staff aware.
Shop, cafe, designated indoor lunch rooms, outdoor picnic areas, outdoor adventure playground (NEW playground opens over Summer 2017).
Accessibility & Disabled Facilities
We offer accessible underground tours. The site is fully wheelchair accessible. We also have disabled toilet facilities. Speak to our Bookings Officer if a member of your group has specific needs and we will always do our best to accommodate your requirements.
Opening Hours & Information
We are open 7 days a week 10-5.
Most schools arrive from 9.30am and leave by 2.30pm.
