What we offer

Take a step back in time to the Edwardian period and on your guided tour learn a little more about the way people lived in this middle class home. Compare the present day to the past, and learn how people lived without the modern comforts we take for granted. Compare building materials, and uses in some of our worksheets. Take part in Rag Rugging, or Washday at Mr Straw's House to learn more about hobbies, past times and the daily routine. If you're interested in outdoors too, join us for a gardens session on how gardens developed over time, or even hunt for fossils and bones, or creepy crawlies in the Orchard.

When you book your visit to Mr Straw's House you would have private access to the property for the duration of your booking.

Please do ring early to book your visit. The property is very small, and we do fill up quickly. Bags of any sort are not permitted in the historic property (except medicine bags) we can lock valuables in reception.

From washday, rag rugging, gardens, insects and mini beasts to worksheets.

Group Sizes Catered For

We can cater for up to 30 students. Tours of the house are in groups of 5 children due to the spaces available.

Materials, Resources & Information Provided

Worksheets and information on the visit can be provided in advance. Pre and post visit learning opportunities are also included in the teacher's pack.

Photography, Filming & Audio Restrictions

Photographs can be taken but without a flash. No video please.

Risk Assessment Details

All sessions have risk assessments which can be provided for teachers. We do ask that the school complete the travel risk assessment.

Pricing Information

Costs vary. Cost for some activities is free, for others £1.50 per child per additional activity. National Trust, Education Group Members benefit from free admission to the property (charges for activities apply) Non Education Group Members are £3 per child admission to the property. Supervising adults are free.
If making multiple bookings a discount could be applied however please ring to discuss your requirements.

Clothing Requirements

Sensible footwear is required, the house is three steep flights of stairs. If wishing to do Washday or any other outdoor activities please ensure suitable warm clothing.

First Aid Information

Mr Straw's House would provide a first aider, all staff are trained.

Available Facilities

Shop, small tea and coffee facility, picnic area. There are facilities to each a packed lunch available at Mr Straw's House. If the weather is nice this would be outdoors, if it is raining the front room of 5 Blyth Grove. If children wanted to purchase sweets we would recommend bringing £5.

Accessibility & Disabled Facilities

This venue isn?t suitable for children with mobility disabilities. The tour of the house is up three steep flights of stairs. There are no disabled toilets available onsite.

Opening Hours & Information

School visits can take place on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays. The property is open Tuesday - Saturday however when a school visit is booked the property is closed for visitors.
