What we offer
The Lunt is an excellent example of an early Roman fort and is the only reconstructed Roman cavalry fort in Britain. Based on the archaeological evidence on site, the Lunt's imposing wooden gateway and ramparts have been reconstructed to create a glimpse into the history of Roman Britain.
Educational visits to the Lunt are tailored to the Key Stage 2 History curriculum, supporting your study of the Roman Empire and its impact on Britain.
What makes us a great choice?
The Lunt is the only reconstructed Roman cavalry fort in Britain. School sessions at the Lunt are very popular and to avoid disappointment we recommend booking your visit at least a term in advance. When calling us to make your provisional booking, please have several possible dates in mind.

We are holders of the LOtC Quality Badge.
What is typically included?
Following in the Footsteps of Soldiers
Duration : 2 hours
Key Stage 2
Our experienced staff will guide you around the Lunt fort site on an interactive tour designed specifically for school groups. The children can climb the wooden ramparts to the gateway and visit the huge circular wooden gyrus. In the granary, which houses the museum, your pupils will hear about the lives of soldiers at the fort and discover more about the nature and function of Roman armour and weapons.
If you would like to make a full day visit to the Lunt, you can add an exciting afternoon session learning Roman battle drill in the gyrus. Led by a uniformed commander, your pupils will use swords and shields to practise authentic Roman military manoeuvres. Great for letting off steam after lunch as well as experiential learning! Alternative indoor activities will be provided in the event of bad weather..
We welcome Special schools for visits to the Lunt. As a historical site, the Lunt presents some challenges for visitors with mobility issues but we will do our best to accommodate these and any other access needs your pupils may have.
Depending on the size of the group and the abilities of your pupils, we can offer the following activities as part of an adapted version of our standard two-hour session:
Roman face pots – a craft session using air-drying clay to create your own Roman pots
Group Sizes Catered For

'To see a 'real' fort was lovely after learning about them for many weeks. Timing of the day was excellent and booking arrangements very thorough. The two ladies running the workshop were lovely. They had excellent knowledge. Many thanks.? April 17
