What we offer

Life Science Centre offers more than 100 curriculum-linked STEM workshops for Early Years through to adult learners, delivered in teaching laboratories and a state-of-the-art planetarium. At KS3 and above it offers workshops for any STEM curriculum topic but has specialist expertise and equipment for astronomy, maths, molecular biology (including PCR), microscopy and dissection.

Furthermore, the permanent exhibitions have been designed with the national curriculum in mind. In the Curiosity Zone, students are encouraged to follow the scientific process: question how things work, devise ways of testing ideas, make observations and discuss their findings. The Brain Zone has much to offer psychology students, but it also offers broader insights, such as how scientists carry out experiments when data is hard to capture. The educational content is further complemented by a changing programme of temporary touring exhibitions.

School groups can combine a visit to Life with a whirl on its open-air ice rink. Recreational ice skating can lead on to a variety of winter sports, as well as improve posture and balance. Ice marshals are on hand to provide coaching for tentative skaters and Life has special packages available if you would like to combine a skate with a visit to the Science Centre or with a workshop.

What makes us a great choice?

Life Science Centre brings incredible touring exhibitions to Newcastle – perfect for inspiring young minds and helping to even the playing field for students who may not otherwise have the opportunity to see the exhibitions in London or overseas. Life is also home to the North’s biggest and best planetarium.

Situated in the heart of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Life Science Centre is only a few minutes’ walk from the city’s mainline train station, making it easily accessible for schools to travel via public transport. Life also has a private service road where coaches may park if space is available – please notify us in advance to book a parking space.

Accreditation and Awards

Life Science Centre is LOtC accredited.

TripAdvisor review: "I can't recommend this place enough. It was perfect! As soon as we arrived we were given a detailed timetable and secure place to put our packed lunches. A member of staff was also available to take us to every activity.

We arrived at 10am and left at 2pm but crammed so much in that it felt like longer. All children and staff thoroughly enjoyed this trip and I highly recommend it to anyone."
