What we offer
Welcome to the Bodmin and Wenford Railway. Discover the excitement and nostalgia of steam travel with a journey back in time on Cornwall's only full size railway still operated by steam locomotives.
Relax in style and enjoy a leisurely 13-mile round trip through beautiful countryside, taking in the sights, sounds and smells of a bygone age, as the era of a Cornish branch line in the 1950s reveals itself during the course of your journey.
The Bodmin and Wenford Railway operates steam trains between Bodmin Parkway (which has been a junction with the national railway network since 1887) and Boscarne Junction (situated on the trackbed of the former Bodmin and Wadebridge Railway, one of the very first railways in the world), via our main station at Bodmin General.

What makes us a great choice?
The Bodmin and Wenford Railway positively welcomes educational visits from pupils and students of all ages. There is much to see and do, and it is possible to combine a visit to the Railway with other local attractions and places of interest, including a town trail of Bodmin, the Town Museum, DCLI Military Museum, the Camel Trail and walks to Cardinham Woods (nature trails) and Lanhydrock House.
We are the ONLY place in Cornwall that can offer pupils the unique experience of seeing and traveling behind full size steam locomotives, almost all of which either worked in the county or are typical of classes that worked in Cornwall in times gone by. Our oldest steam locomotive dates from 1874.
What is typically included?
The Railway is particularly relevant to the following subjects within the National Curriculum: History, Geography, Science, Design and Technology and Art. We are able to accommodate all Key Stages, though the majority of previous educational visits are from children in KS1 and KS2.
There are many opportunities that the Railway offers to educational visits, including simply just a journey by steam train!
An example of a morning school visit in for a KS2 class could be:
09:45 - arrive Bodmin General Station
10:00 - guided tour, to include the workshop, engine shed and signalbox.
11:00 - steam train departs for Boscarne Junction
11:42 - arrive back at Bodmin General
12:10 - steam train departs for Bodmin Parkway
13:00 - arrive back at Bodmin General
(Note: lunch can either be taken on the train or upon arrival back at Bodmin General)
Please contact us to discuss your individual requirements - we are here to help!
Group Sizes Catered For
For travelling on the train, we can cater for groups up to 200. If party leaders would like a member of staff to show your group around the station at Bodmin General (including the engine shed and workshop) we can cater for groups of approximately 30 at a time, but this must be booked in advance.
Materials, Resources & Information Provided
We do have a limited number of worksheets available, but these are in the process of being updated. We would be happy to assist party leaders in producing material to suit the needs and requirements of your own group.
Photography, Filming & Audio Restrictions
We would be delighted for children to take photographs.
Risk Assessment Details
We have a generic risk assessment that we issue to all pre-booked parties. However, it is only valid if amended by the party leader to reflect the specific needs of the group visiting. The BWR recommends that the party leader does a pre-visit (which is free) prior to completing the risk assessment.
Education Officer Information
We do not have a designated Education Officer, but our staff will be happy to assist your group (both in the planning stages and on the day of the trip itself) whenever possible to ensure you get the most from your visit. Please contact Main Office: 01208 73555
Generous discounts are available on many trains for pre-booked groups of 10-24, with 20% discount for groups of 25 or more. Seats are reserved for your group, and special catering can be offered if required and booked in advance. Fares vary depending on the distance traveled. Our Best Value Ticket offers a return trip of 13 miles over the whole line and costs £4.80 for children (aged 3-16) in school partes of 25+.
Children need to wear suitable clothing and footwear for the trip. They may get a little dirty around the Railway.
First Aid Information
First Aid kits are available on trains, in the station buffets, and at the main office at Bodmin General. BWR Staff will contact the nearest available first aider if necessary. There is a hospital with a Minor Injuries Unit in Bodmin, approximately 2 miles from the station. The party should have at least one first aider with the group.
The majority of our trains have a Buffet, serving hold and cold drinks, snacks and light refreshments. There is a Buffet at Bodmin General Station (open on all train operating days), whilst our cafe in the old signalbox at Bodmin Parkway Station is open 363 days a year! Both serve a range of home made food, snacks and non-alcoholic drinks.
There is a Giftshop at Bodmin General which has a good range of souvenirs, gifts, books, models postcards etc to suit all pockets!
On certain days we can provide a 64-seat open coach for parties to sit together to eat a packed lunch etc.
Packed lunches can also be eaten on the train.
Accessibility & Disabled Facilities
The Railway welcomes passengers with disabilities and recommend that Bodmin General Station is the best starting point. Facilities for wheelchair-bound visitors of all ages are available on most trains, with purpose-built accommodation and a ramp to ease boarding from the platform. There is level access onto the platform at Bodmin General, and disabled toilet. Staff are always happy to help.
