All Rise Workshops offers an interactive learning experience through 4 curated workshops which provide students with a greater understanding of the justice system and how it applies to their everyday lives.
1 Introduction to Law
I look at the role of law in our everyday lives, the criminal justice system, law and democracy, the use of evidence, sentencing and parole. It culminates in a mock ‘crown court’ style trial where all the pupils are given roles in the court. I use a number of props to add to the spectacle. I find that bringing law to life in this way is a brilliant channel to make the subject meaningful and relevant for children.
The workshop provides ample opportunity for active learning with six group activities (as well as the mock trial). There are plenty of opportunities to develop debating skills as well as a range of ‘soft skills’ including team-working, confidence, problem solving, curiosity, critical reasoning and resilience). It will also showcase your pupils’ talents and passions and will create a lasting memory.
This workshop covers a number of the core requirements of the PHSE/RSE curriculum including fundamental British Values, citizenship, personal development and careers.
It is suitable for Y4-Y12.
This workshop is available on a half day or full day basis
2 Cyberbullying and the Law
This workshop covers cyberbullying and the law. Through a series of fun and interactive games and activities, this workshop aims to challenge students’ misconceptions, empowering them to identify and articulate their boundaries when it comes to online interactions and respect the boundaries of others.
By adopting a legal approach, we are able to address subjects that can feel challenging, sensitive or even taboo. This workshop will give young people agency, enabling them to fully understand the law around cyberbullying helping them to make, safe, healthy and legal decisions.
This workshop is suitable for Y7 and beyond.
This workshop is available as 1-hour or 2-hour workshop.
This workshop is perfect as part of an anti-bullying week or internet safety week.
3 Crime and Punishment in the Medieval England and trial of Lady Macbeth for conspiracy to murder
This workshop will cast your students into the chaotic world of the Middle Ages where they will take part in a series of immersive activities that will bring to life the medieval justice system in all its gory details. They will participate in a series of discussion points arising from Macbeth where they will learn about the art of oracy and how to present their arguments in an effective and persuasive way.
The workshop will culminate in the mock trial of Lady Macbeth who is charged with conspiracy to murder King Duncan. Macbeth, Banquo’s ghost, King Duncan’s guard and, of course, Lady Macbeth, have all been invited and the jury will decide, once and for all, whether Lady Macbeth was the real power behind the throne. Alternatively (as the Defence will claim) was she simply a powerless and loyal wife who was wholly subject to Macbeth’s insecurities and obsession with what others thought of him. There is sure to be blood on the carpet! All your students will the trial and it promises to be a fight to the death.
This workshop will appeal to anyone studying crime and punishment in the Middle Ages and/or Macbeth up to GCSE.
4. The Trial of Henry VIII for the murder of Anne Boleyn
Henry executed Anne Boleyn for multiple reasons, including personal, political and religious. Did these reasons justify her brutal killing on a cold and frosty morning on 19th May 1536?
