A £1 million Breaks 4 Kids fund has been re-launched by the YHA, formerly known as the Youth Hostel Association, to help fund youth and school trips for children from low income households.

A third of children never get to experience education outside the classroom, so the fund aims to ensure that every child has a chance to be included in future school trips, to help build their confidence, self-esteem and develop important skills in communication and team building.

The Break 4 Kids fund, founded by the YHA, provides grants that can pay for up to 50% of the cost for their food and accommodation, at one of its 200 hostels. The discount can be as part of an organised school trip, or part of one of the YHA school trip package holidays as well.

The support is aimed at children who are eligible for free school meals, or if their parents are claiming income support or housing benefit. This also means that teachers are able to fill in the application on behalf of the pupils at the time of the YHA booking.

The funding for Breaks 4 Kids is raised by both individual donations and corporate sponsorship. The fund now also receives a £3 donation from every YHA membership fee.
