Description

Hostel Connect is Derry City's Largest Hostel and can accommodate up to 73 people in both dorms and private rooms. It is situated in the heart of this Historic Walled City, which played host to the City of Culture 2013, and only 2 minutes from the historic walls, museums and cultural centers.

Hostel Connect is located on the Strand Road, the main through fare and bus route of the city. We are literally 2 -5 minutes from the famous historic walls dating back to 1601; the Bogside area which is home to the famous Bogside Murals and the tragic and controversial Bloody Sunday conflict of 1972; and Waterloo Square where many of the shops are located.

We have 10 bedrooms consisting of two 15 bed mixed dorms; a 9 bed dorm, one 6 bed female only dorm; one 6 bed mixed dorm; one private family room (double and triple bunk) and three private double rooms (double bed); and one twin room (two single beds). Each room is named after the funky color that it has been painted!

We have lovingly brought back the original wooden floors throughout most of the hostel adding a great ambiance. The hostel also boasts and huge common room where you can chill and hang out on sofas and watch TV or movies on our large screen TV. We have specifically located this on the top floor and in its own wing of the building, so you won't be disturbed or won't disturb other guests.

The hostel also has a good size kitchen and dining area (open 7am -10:30pm) on the first floor. There are 6 separate shower rooms (electric so you'll never run out of hot water), 3 on each floor. We offer a free continental breakfast with each night stay, free wifi throughout the hostel and smiles are always free.

The hostel reception is open from 9am until 9pm, but there is always a member of staff in the building at all times. All dorms have coded door handles for extra security and the front door is equipped with a digital door lock. The hostel has CCTV for extra security throughout the hostel.

Hostel Connect is in the city center, we have a Tesco supermarket and multiplex cinema across the street, there are several restaurants with 1 or 2 mins walk. Downstairs on the ground floor we have a barbers, café and chemist. There are several city bus stops nearby and we are 5 mins from the main bus station.

From the bus station

We are about a 5-10 minute walk on foot. Just turn right coming out of the bus station and walk down the Foyle Road to the lights, cross Shipquay Street and walk in front of the Guildhall (the building with the big clock, you should have the Guildhall on your right and the famous Derry Walls on your left. Keep walking across the big square and you will come to Waterloo place, keep right and follow the side walk down the Strand Road. You will eventually come to a set of lights (Great James Street), cross the street and keep walking, you will pass the Ice Wharf Bar on your right, then TESCO'S  and the movie theatre. Look to your left, you will see HOSTEL CONNECT  across the street. If you're unsure then ask someone, Derry folk are very friendly and glad to help point you in the right direction. There are plenty of taxis just outside the bus station as well! Simples

From the train station

Look out for the shuttle bus that will be waiting outside of the station after every train arrives. It will take you to the bus station, which is located in the city center on Foyle Street. Just get on the bus with everyone else. It’s free. The train station is located 5 minutes out of the city center on the waterside. Once at the bus station, follow the directions above or grab a cab.

From Derry City Airport

The airport is about a 20 minute drive from the city center. Most flights are serviced by the Airporter bus service. It drops off at the Airporter Bus Terminal which is at the far end of the Strand Road situated on the edge of the city center. The fare is £5. From Airporter bus terminal it's about a 15 minute walk to Hostel Connect, if you're up to it. Just ask the staff to point you in the right direction, but it's fairly easy and once on the Strand Road you just keep walking straight towards the City Centre. A taxi from the Airporter Terminal to the hostel will run you £2.50 - £3.
A taxi from the airport will cost around £12/13, so for more than one person, this makes a better option.

why you are great for educational visits?

Derry city is one of the oldest inhabited settlements in Ireland and has a fascinating history. The vibrant city of Derry~Londonderry is a must see destination thanks to its historic local attractions, an action packed calendar of events and a unique heritage.

Take a trip back in time strolling along the famous 17th century Walls. Celebrating their 400th birthday in 2013, here are one of the most intact city walls in Europe, and the only remaining completely walled city in Ireland. The walls make a perfect location for photos with stunning views over the cityscape and River Foyle.

Nestling just inside the walls is St Columb’s Cathedral, the first cathedral of its type built after the Reformation in 1633, making it the oldest building in the city. Dedicated to the name of Saint Columba (Columb), an Irish monk who established a Christian settlement in the city in the sixth century, the cathedral is a treasure trove of historical interest. Its Chapter House Museum has a display of artefacts dating from the Siege of Derry in 1689. It is also home to the original padlocks and keys of the four original gates of the city walls.

The city is home to the Museum of Free Derry, the Tower Museum, The Apprentice Boys of Derry Association and Memorial Hall, which all have their unique part of the city’s heritage to tell.

Since it was opened in June 2011, the Peace Bridge has become one of the city’s main attractions to tourists and locals alike. The pedestrian and cycle Peace Bridge links the newly opened public space at Ebrington Square. Measuring over five acres in size, it is larger than Trafalgar Square in London.

As well as our fantastic city you also have an abundance of other things to do and learn about, in the surrounding areas. Probably one of the most famous is the Giant’s Causeway but there are many others such as Foyle Valley Railway Museum, Riverwatch Aquarium, and the Ulster American Folk Park.
