Charterhouse offers group bookings sole use of the centre and can accommodate up to 63 people in 11 bedrooms (some of which are en-suite), each accommodating between 4 -  6 people in bunk beds.

It boasts a large dining room, modern kitchen, visitors lounge, classroom, boot room and an observatory.

It is an award winning centre, built using sustainable materials, including Western Red Cedar wood.  It is also has Sedum Roof and is heated by a woodchip boiler, with fuel sourced from a local provider.

The centre has key pads on all external doors.

Centre staff do not sleep at Charterhouse overnight but they can be contacted if you need assistance or in the event of an emergency. A list of contact numbers will be provided to you on arrival. A duty person based at Kilve Court is also available 24hrs a day.

What size groups do they cater for?

We generally work with children and young people but the centre can be hired by adult groups. We look for a minimum of 20 people.

Charterhouse Centre

Charterhouse Centre is located right in the heart of the Mendip Hills AONB.  From Churchill (which is accessible from the M5 Junction 21), follow the A368 east towards Blagdon and turn right to go up Burrington Combe.  Take the first right signposted to Charterhouse.

From Wells, take the B3135 at Green Ore and turn right on to the B3134.  Follow this road past the Castle of Comfort to the turning on the left, signposted Charterhouse.

There are no bus routes that come close to the centre. The nearest train station is at Yatton. 20 minutes away.

Our centres offer high quality Outdoor Education, Holiday Activity Courses, Courses for Highly Able children and Duke of Edinburgh Residential trips. Courses are aimed at both Young People, Adults and School/Youth Groups.

The staff team ill great you on your arrival and work with you to make the most of your visit.

The centre has a modern kitchen that will provide all of your meals.

We offer groups a variety of activities. These include Abseiling, Archery, Bushcraft, Caving, Camping, Climbing, Fantasy Trail/ Night Line, Gorge Walking, Orienteering, Pond Dipping, Team Building and Walking.

Programmes are tailor made to suit the visiting groups requirements.

We can cater to each groups individual need if a group booking is made.

6 of the rooms have en suites. There are also boys and girls toilet / showers located at the end of the accommodation corridor.

Are visitors allowed to take photos, video or audio, if appropriate?

It’s up to visiting groups.

What is your process for booking pre arranged risk assessments?

We can provide a risk management summary to visiting groups. A prospectus details various H&S documents.

A site visit can be arranged.

The Centre Manager can come to visit the school to talk to the parents, children and teachers before their visit.

Fire Protection

The centres are not required to hold a Fire Certificate, however, each Centre is inspected by a Somerset County Council appointed person, who produces the fire risk assessment and ensures the centres meet the Council’s Fire Safety standards.


The Service, as part of Somerset County Council, holds Public Liability insurance, as required by law. It has a limit of £25 million indemnity for any one incident. We would recommend participants make their own provision for personal accident cover should they consider it appropriate.

What is the cost of the accommodation?

Activity group bookings - Costs  vary depending on what activities are chosen.

A typical 3 day activity course costs £140 per person. A week long activity course typically costs £230 per person. This includes all food, activities and accommodation.

School/group bookings: Supervising adult goes free with every 10 children

Please list facilities available?

The centre has a large hall where meals are eaten. It also has observatory, classroom, visitors lounge, limited WIFI for customers, 2 ceiling mounted digital projectors.

Do you have first aid on site or will the group need to bring a qualified first aider?

All instructors/duty staff are first aid trained.

Are there disabled facilities?

We try to accommodate disabled visitors to the best of our ability. We have a disabled bedroom, lift and wet / shower room.
