Courses are suitable for children aged from 4 to 18 years of age.
Outdoor activities are fantastic tools for personal development, promoting confidence, team working, understanding others, communication, understanding risk, making personal assessments, reducing environmental impact and many more.
Geography Field Studies Key Stage 2 - A/AS Level
Fieldwork sites are in our local area and can include investigating the diversity of sand dune ecosystems at Braunton Burrows to studying Exmoor National Park fluvial processes. Classrooms and a wide range of field equipment are available as well as a computer suite with data handling software.
‘Learning through experience’ allow young people the chance to explore aspects of personal and team development. This is followed up with reviews resulting in individuals gaining a raised awareness of themselves, confidence and the motivation to continue learning back in the real world

Set outside the picturesque village of Appledore, Skern Lodge is set in its own grounds and is ideally located for that remote residential. With the town of Bideford only 3 miles away and Barnstaple with its rail link only ten miles away, Skern is also accessible for arriving on public transport if required. The North Devon link road links you to the UK motorway network and you could be here from London in just three and a half hours.
Why are you great for educational visits?
Set within 22 acres of grounds with the tidal waters of the Torridge estuary on the doorstep, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and inside the internationally recognised UNESCO Biosphere of Braunton Burrows.
Skern Lodge utilizes the locations and natural surroundings to enhance the experience for each young individual. Whether it’s to discover coastal erosion, surf the waves or to learn something new about themselves through the challenges they have just faced on the high ropes, Skern Lodge has something for every individual.
With over 35 years experience supplying outdoor activity and educational programmes we pride ourselves in delivering tailor made courses that are led by qualified and experienced staff.
Is there anything you offer specifically for educational visits?
We have a variety of resources available allowing us to design relevant worksheet, log books, packs or pre or post course projects appropriate to your learning outcomes. Courses are designed specifically to the needs of the client and we will try and accommodate your group requirements as best we can.
Can you provide information regarding room sizes and room facilities?
The centre provides a range of accommodation from single, twin and dormitory style rooms sleeping 3 - 8. Many have on-suite rooms with others having shared bathrooms available. Each accommodation area has its own lounges and social areas for staff & students with TV.

What is your process for booking pre arranged risk assessments?
Risk assessments are available via our website through our teacher/leader log-in. Log-in details can be obtained by contacting Skern Lodge. We are required to run 3 drills per year, but often run one when requested by groups, but is not essential.
What are the contact details for their education officer?
N/A, but we do have several staff available who are always happy to discuss your programme requirements.

Do you have first aid on site or will the group need to bring a qualified first aider?
All staff at Skern Lodge are first aid trained. A qualified member of staff is also on duty through the night.
Are there disabled facilities?
A number of the rooms are suitable for those who are wheelchair bound and have wet room showers.

Ask us for our Schools DVD. View it yourself and then use it with pupils and parents. We provide every parent with a briefing leaflet. In addition, we will visit your school to help brief and prepare your group if you wish – at no extra charge.
