The SV in SV Educational Services stands for Science Viking. That is because we have two strands in the services we offer: science and history. Our Fun Science section brings a variety of science workshops and live science shows to your school. Midgard Living History features Bjarni Thorvaldrson, famous Viking raider and trader, and other historical characters who will bring history to life in your school.

Why is your Outreach Workshops great for educational needs?

Fun Science workshops are available to primary schools and include a variety of ways of teaching curriculum science that may be beyond the scope of usual science lessons. Our science shows include The Fun Science Show, showing science through everyday objects, and The Fire Show: the name says it all and The Fire Show went down as the absolute schools favorite at The British Science Festival in 2013.

For full details on our science offerings see the Fun Science website at

Midgard Living History really does bring history to life, in your own classroom. Our ever expanding line-up of historical characters incudes our own intrepid Viking, Bjarni Thorvaldrson, famous raider, trader and scourge of the Irish Sea, and Brother Mellitus, a medieval monk.

Bjarni has a wealth of tales and activities to help your children really understand what it was like to live in Viking times, and brings a wealth of replica artifacts that the children can handle, examine and use.

Brother Mellitus is a scribe and shows how to make and use authentic medieval ink and paints, while telling the tale of how the Lindisfarne Gospels were written in the early 8th century, although using the same recipes and techniques that were used through medieval and Tudor times, right through to the early 19th century.

What does a typical school educational outreach or Workshop service include?

For a Fun Science visit we can offer up to 4 sessions during the day, including a mixture of workshops and shows. We try to be as flexible as possible and can come to each class for workshops if absolutely necessary, although shows are best performed in the school hall or theatre.

Workshops and shows are tailored to the age group receiving them. You can expect some very excited children as they learn science in a very fun way.

For a Midgard Living History day we have a standard morning and a choice of activities for the afternoon. Our characters usually order a school dinner, sit with the children and discuss the unusual meals they are eating.

What group sizes do you cater for?

For Fun Science workshops groups have a maximum size of 30, although slightly larger groups can be accommodated after discussion. Science shows can include the entire school.

For Midgard Living History days up to two classes can be combined for Viking days, but Brother Mellitus can only handle up to 30 children at once.

Can you take photos, video or audio? Are there any copyright restrictions?

We are happy for photographs and audio/video recordings to be taken for educational uses within the school.

Can you provide worksheets or information packs?

Fun Science workshop instructions and worksheets can be left with the class teacher upon request. After hours CPD sessions based upon The Fun Science Show demonstrations are available at extra charge.

Midgard Living History sells a Viking Resource book, published by Gripping Hands Publications.

What is your process for taking bookings?

Bookings are taken via telephone or email.

What is the cost?

Science shows and workshops are all individually priced, with a maximum £600 per day charge. Schools in Cumbria are only charged a maximum of £400 for a full day.

Midgard Living History days are charged at a standard £250 per half day or £350 per full day. Cumbrian schools, again, enjoy a special local discount (£175/£250).

For multiple day bookings special discounts can be negotiated. All fees include travel and accommodation costs, usually with no other extra charges.

Do you have any testimonials from previous customers who you have visited that we can include in your section?

"Thank you so much for coming into school and providing such an amazing day for everyone. Your workshops were excellent and the children have since used their newfound engineering skills to build even stronger paper bridges and even higher spaghetti towers. The 'fire show' was the absolute highlight of science week, if not the highlight of the year so far! The children, and teachers, were totally enthralled by the bangs, multicoloured flames and seemingly impossible scientific feats. I have never known a round of applause so loud and enthusiastic, and the children talked about nothing else for the rest of the week!"

Rachel Selway, South Walney Junior School, Cumbria

"The Fire Show was one of our easiest selections to include in the 2013 Young People’s Programme at the British Science Festival. Using thrilling demonstrations to demonstrate core curriculum science, it left our audiences wanting more. Highly recommended!"

Colin Wilkinson, Corylus Education

Dear Terry,

Many thanks for a fantastic visit to Greystoke School last week. We had a fantastic day and the children have picked up so much knowledge and understanding about Viking life - and their enthusiasm this week has been great! I was listening in to four of the girls role playing as Viking children at play time this week - grinding grain, feeding animals and playing games. The children have also really enjoyed writing as if they were Viking children and this showed how much they had learnt from your visit too!

Many thanks for a great day,

Sophie Heron, Greystoke School, near Penrith

Dear Terry,

Thank you so much for your visit to Seascale Year 5. Your workshop as Brother Mellitus was a fantastic learning experience for all of our class. In the words of one girl, it was “a history, a science and a literacy lesson all in one!” I would highly recommend a visit from Brother Mellitus. All of the learning from the visit was delivered within the context of the Lindisfarne Gospels. Your teaching was well-informed and your authoritative delivery style matched the needs and age of the class, as well as the demands of your position as Brother Mellitus.
Thank you so much for your visit!"

Penny Thompson

Class Teacher, Year 5, Seascale School
