Description

An increasing number of schools around the UK have been incorporating indoor climbing into their curriculum due to the numerous benefits to young people and the increasing demand for schools to meet the criteria for the Curriculum for Excellence. The Glasgow Climbing Centre can provide a variety of climbing courses to suit your needs, whether it is a single visit as a reward for a classes hard work during the year, or an ongoing long term development course aiming for a nationally recognised qualification. Popular courses and activities with schools are:

•    Group Taster Sessions

•    NICAS / NIBAS Development Sessions

•    Abseiling

•    Outdoor Climbing Activities

Climbing is a great way for kids to exercise and have fun whilst learning new skills. It can also help develop their coordination, team building, self discipline as well as being a great way to build confidence. NICAS is the ideal way to provide structure to their learning, for more information please go to NICAS.

NICAS has been mapped on to the Curriculum for Excellence at National 4 level.

Why is this venue great for School Trips and Educational Visits?

Situated in an converted church, we offer indoor climbing all the way up to the original oak rafters, and even have abseiling set up in our bell tower, going down the outside of the spire! If 14m Climbing walls with 5m overhangs are your thing, then we have an abundance of it. If the thought of leaving the ground supported by 10mm of rope leaves you cold, why not warm up in our great café, Currently rated as one of the top cafés in Glasgow on Trip Advisor. The café can cater for the group before or after the session, or provide a comfortable spot for staff to watch the climbing, while using our free wifi, or enjoying a cup of locally roasted coffee.

This venue has the following accreditation:

We are ALS Registered: Reg no. L10853R0161

What size groups do they cater for?

Instructor : group ratios are 1:6 for children aged 7+, and we can cater for groups of up to 66 at a time. For younger children we reduce the session times and the ratios to 1:4. Costs are per instructor.

What can they provide you with to support your school trip or educational visit?

We are a Primary Centre for the National Indoor Climbing Award Scheme (NICAS), which recognises a climbers development, and has been mapped on to the Curriculum for Excellence at National 4.

More info on NICAS can be found on their website: http://www.nicas.co.uk

Can you take photos, video or audio? Are there any copyright restrictions?

We are happy for groups to take photos of their group, but care should be taken to avoid photographing others in the centre. As we play music, any video may breach copyright regs (although we have a PRS license). Please ask us if you would like to take video, and we can turn off the tunes.

How do you arrange a risk assessment?

We welcome teachers or group leaders to have a look around, or a chat prior to their visit, so we can tailor the session to the group, and can email out all the appropriate risk assessments.

What does it cost?

We charge a cost per instructor (see group ratios and sizes above), and include all equipment hire in the cost.

Our standard cost is £100 per instructor, reducing to £90 if booked and paid online. We further offer to UKSchool Trips, an off peak price of £80 per instructor for sessions taking place during the school term school day.

We can offer longer sessions at an additional cost of £45 per hour, or we can offer a days activity at an outdoor climbing venue for £260 per instructor per day.

Is specific clothing required?

Sports clothing gives freedom to move, but we would prefer no football colours. We would recommend trousers rather than shorts, incase the climbers use their knees rather than their feet to climb.

Do you have first aid on site?

All our qualified instructional staff are also qualified first aiders.

What facilities do they have for school trips and educational visits?

Toilets, Changing areas, limited showers also available. Café with seating for 40. Outside seating in our garden for when the sun is out in Glasgow (!)

Are there disabled facilities?

Climbing is an activity suitable for most individuals, and there is a recent upsurge in participation in paraclimbing events in the UK.

Climbing is an activity that offers a challenge to all, and we have climbs suited to all abilities. We have flooring changes around the climbing areas, so users with a visual impairment can be aware of the increased risk associated with being close to a climbing area.

We welcome groups, no matter their ability, but have a few limits. As we are based in a listed building, we have limits placed on us when adapting the centre for wheelchair users: We have a flight of sandstone steps up to the front of the building, and our toilet cubicles are not accessible in a wheelchair.

What are your opening days and hours?

Our standard opening hours are from 11am – 10pm weekdays, and 10am -6pm weekends. We will hapilly open from 9am for booked groups.

Is there anything else that you feel is important and want to include in your information?

Please give us a call to discuss your groups objectives at an early stage, and we can tailor your sessions to suit.
