Avon Boating is one of England's oldest and largest traditional boating companies, offering boats for hire on one of the finest rivers in the country, the Avon at Stratford.
We operate a fleet of five passenger vessels, with departure points at the Bancroft Gardens, next to the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, or our Boathouse on Swan’s Nest Lane. For older groups, at the Boathouse we hire out rowing boats, punts, and self-drive motor boats for those that want to explore the further reaches of the river by themselves.
Our cruises pass by the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Holy Trinity Church (final resting place of William Shakespeare) and pass under the two bridges, the 19th Century Tramway Bridge and 15th Century Clopton Bridge. We then cruise into the surrounding country side which can give groups the chance to see the varied wildlife found on the river.
The boat trips can take any form you wish and we will tailor them to fit in with whatever lesson plan you want to use, be it cultural, historical or social. A live commentary is also available if required and the crew is always on hand to answer your questions.
Why is this venue great for School Trips and Educational Visits?
We operate a fleet of four classic Edwardian passenger vessels, three of which are fully electric powered allowing for quiet and pollution free cruising. In 2012 we introduced our new boat to the fleet ‘Titania’. She uses a diesel/electric hybrid engine for quiet running as well as benefiting from being fully covered, giving us the ability to offer all year round running.
The size of our fleet also gives us the flexibility to accommodate any size group of up to 250 passengers. With departure points at the Bancroft Gardens, next to the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, or our Boathouse on Swan’s Nest Lane we are also able to offer the flexibility and convenience you may need for your group.
Apart from our large fleet of boats available for hire, we have many close associations with other venues in Stratford. Packages can be created to include visits with the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, Royal Shakespeare Theatre, and the sightseeing bus tour with City Sightseeing.
The Butterfly Farm in Stratford also offers a package of entry to the farm and a boat trip with us. This can be booked directly with the Butterfly Farm.
What does a typical school trip or educational visit include?
We offer friendly and relaxed river trips, which are only set by their duration. All age groups are catered for, and with guidance from yourselves and our own knowledge of the river we can create a visit that you require. Information leaflets can be requested to assist in guidance to the river and its sights.
