Bristol Cathedral offers the opportunity for children to experience awe and wonder as they learn about the Christian faith, the history of the building and the people who have been involved in its story. There are many opportunities for cross-curricular learning, including Religious Education, History, Art, Music, Literacy, Citizenship and even Maths! Tours, trails and workshops are available with experienced education guides and we can tailor your visit to suit your learning objectives, time available and cost.

Why is this venue great for School Trips and Educational Visits?

This is a great place to come for a Learning Outside the Classroom experience where history is combined with beauty, and the stories of old meet the lessons of today.

Bristol Cathedral is a place where children can explore, have fun and learn through looking, listening, playing talking and creating.

Children have told us that they love the big spaces of our Cathedral, the fun activities and the ‘pretty and colourful’ stained glass! Teachers appreciate the expertise of our guides and describe their visits as ‘enjoyable and educational’.

What does a typical school trip or educational visit include?

We are happy to arrange for a general tour of the Cathedral for groups of children but we also have a number of different tours and trails available, including:

•    Special Places (KS1)

•    A Place of Worship (KS2)

•    Christmas Trail (KS1 & 2)

•    Journey of Life (KS2)

•    Tudor Trail (KS2)

•    Art in Religion (KS2)

We also can run workshops for the children, including:

•    Stained Glass Painting

•    Clay tiles and patterns

•    Clay sculptures

•    Stained Glass with tissue paper

•    Illuminated letters

Your visit can include a tour or trail alone or you can add a workshop as well.

What size groups do they cater for?

We try to cater for all sizes, but some activities will be limited to 30 in each group due to the size of our Education Centre (groups can be rotated throughout a morning or afternoon). This will be taken into consideration when planning your visit with us.

What can they provide you with to support your school trip or educational visit?

Many of our tours and trails have children’s booklets provided with them, which can be used during the visit as a point of focus, or back at school as a follow-up activity. We are happy to send a copy to teachers in advance so that they can decide how best to use these resources.

Can you take photos, video or audio? Are there any copyright restrictions?

Yes we are happy for children to record their visit in this way, bearing in mind any photo restrictions each school may have in place.

How do you arrange a risk assessment?

We provide a risk assessment document on our website, and if a further visit is needed we are happy to provide a date and time when this would be suitable.

What are the contact details for their education officer?

Margaret Bull

0117 946 8175

What does it cost?

A standard tour will cost £1 per child (adults free).
Any workshops that are in addition to this will be charged at between £1 and £2 per child. This cost varies based on the workshop materials required – please enquire on booking for a quote.

Is specific clothing required?

In winter the Cathedral can get quite cold so we would recommend a coat.

Do you have first aid on site?

Our vergers are first-aid trained, but all school groups should have a qualified first aider with them on any visit outside school premises.

What facilities do they have for school trips and educational visits?

Bristol Cathedral has a Coffee Shop that serves drinks, snacks and lunches. We also have a shop with gift items and mementos available to purchase. We also have a room which can be booked in advance if you wish to each a packed lunch. This carries a small £5 extra charge.

Are there disabled facilities?

We have ramps that provide access to most of the Cathedral, as well as a disabled toilet. Access to the disabled toilet, Coffee Shop and Chapter House is not possible through the main Cathedral entrance, but can be accessed through the Cloister car park.

What are your opening days and hours?

We can take tours or workshops from 9.30am until 5pm on most days, however we do have many other activities and events taking place within the Cathedral. Advanced booking of several weeks is strongly suggested to avoid disappointment.
