Introduction for school trips and educational visits

Glachbeg provides day programmes for schools and other groups using a tool box of resources which include a sustainable classroom, Shetland Cattle, sheep, poultry, small mammals, woodland, ponds, garden, fruit, cheese, butter, yoghurt, ice cream making, spinning, etc etc .

Programmes range from  farming topics, through  environmental education in its broadest sense, to subject areas delivered through the “ hands on” context of the croft.

Why is this venue great for School Trips and Educational Visits?

The centre is run by teachers who understand the needs of teachers and children, and is focused on educational programmes with fun as a bi product !  We can focus programmes on all ages from pre school to secondary.

What does a typical school trip or educational visit include?

All visits are  tailor made, but will follow a format including a classroom introduction, Health and safety talk, tour, activities ( outdoor/ indoor depending on programme) picnic lunch, activities, finishing off with environmental games.

What can they provide you with to support your school trip or educational visit?

All programmes are designed  by discussion as we do not have a menu of choices. Information leaflet gives ideas  as starting points ( see “ Downloads”  Section of website or ask).Programmes may be focused on A Curriculum for Excellence  or on  sustainability themes.

Can you take photos, video or audio? Are there any copyright restrictions?

Yes. Though it may be that some other people working on the farm may not wish their photos to be taken.

How do you arrange a risk assessment?

The centre is designed around the provisions of HSE Bulletin No. 23 “ Avoiding ill health on open farms” We risk assess our activities, but legally schools have to  risk assess their own students doing them .( No centre can take that responsibility)  Where possible we encourage a  pre placement visit. If this is not possible information can be exchanged to support RA.

What does it cost?

£6 per child ( min £120 per day) Discounted to £5 per day from October to April.  No charge for accompanying adults.

Is specific clothing required?

Clothing suitable for the weather, old shoes/ boots.

Do you have first aid on site?

First aid is available on site.

What facilities do they have for school trips and educational visits?

A 13 acre farm set up specifically for education day programmes.
A high quality “sustainable” classroom, with toilets/ showers.   
Shetland cattle, sheep, poultry, pigs ( seasonal)small mammals, growing, poly tunnel , tree nursery, pond, woodland, machinery, food processing equipment.
Green wood working, An experienced teacher, Possible overnight camping/ classroom floor !

Open throughout the year.
