Description

We are delighted to offer residential facilities for students at our renovated Barn. We are based in the small, historical market town of Sedbergh, which is just 5 miles from J37 off the M6. Our Barn is set in 5 acres at the bottom of the Howgill Fells, giving children the opportunity to explore the adventures of the countryside!

Town is only a 5 minute walk away, where there are lovely little shops and cafes set amongst cobbled streets and ginnels. Whether you want to use our Barn, solely as accommodation and plan your own learning activities or we can offer you onsite, curriculum based outdoor learning which is delivered by the highly reputable Field Studies Council. Sleeping up to 28 students and up to 4 members of staff in 8 ensuite bedrooms our Barn offers a flexible space with bags of room for the students to ‘run free’ on the 2 acre games field or in the games room if the weather is wet. Walks and hikes directly from the doorstep with ice cream farms en route. Nearby textile Mill offering free educational visits as well as water activities on Killington Lake.

What group sizes do you cater for?
Our barn offers 7 en suite bedrooms; sleeping 4 students per room. We also have a en-suite bedroom which sleeps up to 4 adults.

Please give information regarding room sizes and room facilities?
All rooms are ensuite bunk beds. Only TV is in the TV lounge

What is the cost of the accommodation?
Our barn is available Monday to Thursday and we do not charge seasonal rates. We ask that groups book a minimum of a 2 night stay (Monday & Tuesday or Wednesday and Thursday). The minimum base number we accept is 12 children/students.

We do not charge for accommodation for teaching staff.

The cost per student per night is £20 and is based on children bringing their own sleeping bag. All beds come with a mattress cover and pillow. We can also provide duvets, bedding and towels at an additional £5 per person, per night.

We try to be as flexible as possible in terms of payment as we understand the pressures of collating payment from every child! We are happy for you to reserve the Barn for £100 and pay us nearer the time of your stay (within 4 weeks of your arrival date).

We ask for a standard security bond of £100 and this is fully refundable following your stay, should there be no breakages or damage to the Barn.

What is your process for booking pre arranged risk assessments?
We require every group leader to visit our Barn before the date of their visit to carry out a formal risk assessment. We provide an induction when each group arrives, providing information regarding the fire alarms, fire exits and other general house keeping information. Someone is always on call to help and answer queries and we provide a free 0800 number for Leaders to contact us. There is also a welcome book in the main lounge that provides information regarding first aid kits etc.

Do you have any testimonials from previous schools we can include?
Dean Gibson School, Kendal (June 2017), returning again for a week visit in 2018!
Dean Gibson enjoyed a highly successful and productive stay at Howgills Bunk Barn. We felt looked after yet independent. The space is ideal for groups of children; providing a safe, spacious and well equipped environment. The two kitchens and large dining area enabled us to self-cater with ease. The indoor classroom with ping pong table gave us somewhere to gather and relax, which proved invaluable when the weather was poor. The affiliation with the Field Studies Council worked extremely well for us, providing well-planned, adventurous activities which were tailor-made to the needs of our group. A great residential and will definitely be back! Louise Mahon

St Thomas’s School, Kendal (July 2017), returning again for a visit in Summer 2018!
I am writing to you to thank you for a wonderful residential stay at Howgill’s.
I took a whole class of Year 3 to the barn and we were blown away! What a beautiful, clean, well-equipped, exciting place to stay. The barn is gorgeous and the outdoor areas were stunning. All staff and children were delighted. Perfect location, close to all amenities and a quirky, little bookshop.

Before the trip, Dawn and Nigel could not have been more helpful! They went out of their way to help us, considering we were a last-minute booking. The whole trip was glorious and ran smoothly. They recommended places to visit and gave me vital contact numbers for Farfield Mill and Howgills Fellside Ice cream Farm; both were fantastic trips out. The children got to weave and experiment with ‘rag-rugging’ with the staff, before eating large, fancy-flavoured ice creams at the Farm. We then had a tour of the farm and all of the animals – we milked cows, held chicks and laughed.

For dinner, Dawn and Nigel had recommended a local pub (The Three Hares) for food to be delivered to the barn. As soon as we arrived it had been kept hot for us and we were starving after our walking. We ordered trays of lasagne and the portions were huge! The lasagne was just delicious and even the children (some who have either never tried lasagne or ‘didn’t like it’) devoured it! This came with fresh bread and salad. We definitely didn’t go hungry.

After dinner, we had birthday cake for a child’s birthday and we sat outside on the patio with a beautiful hillside view with the sun shining down on us. We all sang ‘Happy Birthday’ loudly and the children’s faces were lit up with delight. They then had play-time where they happily charged around the patio in a safe and secure environment. The teachers could relax too.

At night, the barn lights up with beautiful, twinkly fairy lights and we could only describe the whole experience as magical. The teaching staff felt as though they were on a luxurious holiday!

The bedrooms were spotless and the mattresses extremely comfortable – we all slept incredibly well. Bedding was all provided within a discounted price and was clean and soft. Obviously a lot of money has been spent on equipping the accommodation with top-notch mattresses and other lovely amenities. The showers were ideal (wet-room style) and powerful water and toilets, considering you feel as though you are way out from the rest of the world due to the peaceful nature of the barn. The kitchen was exactly what we needed for a school trip – there was nothing missing and Dawn and Nigel had even provided us with fresh bread and jam. The dishwasher was ideal!

A beautiful breakfast was provided, all within a very reasonable price – jam, honey, chocolate spread, butter, pancakes, bread, fruit loaf, cereals, fresh juice, strawberries, bananas – everything we could have wanted. The children and staff thoroughly enjoyed it. After breakfast we had great fun in the Games Room playing table tennis – what a lovely room to have in the barn. Thank you again for a fantastic stay

Is there anything else that you feel is important and want to include in your information?
