Description

Dance is a fun and highly effective way of getting children and young people active, and dancing at school can start a life-long interest in dance. Dance City can deliver a wide range of one-off workshop sessions or longer term workshop packages to meet your needs.

There are many benefits to including dance within the delivery of your curriculum. As well as encouraging your students to be physically active, dance can boost confidence and self-esteem, promote creativity and self-expression, develop social skills, promote learning about different cultures and encourage students to work together regardless of ability.

Did you know that Dance City has the biggest programme of professional dance performances outside London?

We present live dance performances by regional, national and international companies in our 250 seat theatre. From companies such as Motionhouse and Jasmin Vardimon Company, who are on the GCSE curriculum, to productions targeting specific age groups, there is something for everyone. Tickets to performances start at just £8.00 (for under 18’s) and all groups get one ticket free in every 10.

Please summarize why you are great to support learning.

Dance City is the National Dance Development organisation for the North East region and is supported by Arts Council England and Newcastle City Council.

We can help you to plan and evaluate how dance can support your school development plans and we can offer CPD training for your teachers to enable them to develop their own dance teaching skills. All of our teachers are highly qualified, DBS for children and checked and skilled to give you and your students the best possible experience.

Dance City can also support towards Arts Award and Artsmark. See www.dancecity.co.uk for details

What does a typical school workshop visit include?

Nursey and Primary Schools

Workshops for Nursery and Primary age children can focus on areas of the curriculum and find creative and fun ways of learning together. Our workshops fit seamlessly with the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Scheme) and help children to develop confidence, collaboration and movement skills in a positive and safe environment.

All of our workshop packages can be tailored to meet any additional needs of your students and can be linked to particular subject areas.

Workshops can be designed to improve knowledge of specific subject areas such as the following:

  • English – Speaking and listening skills
  • Maths – Counting and using numbers for simple patterns
  • PSHE – Taking part in dance with partners and in groups
  • Citizenship – Developing confidence, responsibility and making the most of each individual’s abilities, learning about other cultures and tolerance
  • P.E. – Mastering basic movements including running, jumping, balance, agility, co-ordination (KS1). Developing flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance and perform dances using a range of movement patterns (KS2)

Secondary Schools and Sixth Form Colleges

Taking part in dance contributes to student’s physical, social and cultural development. As a physical activity it promotes fitness and well-being. As performers, students develop confidence and self-esteem; and their trust, respect and tolerance of others increases through learning about cultural diversity through dance, working with partners, sharing ideas and physically being in contact with other people.

All of our workshop packages can be tailored to meet any additional needs of your students and can be linked to particular subject areas.

P.E. – (KS3 & 4) Pupils will be taught to develop their technique, perform dances within a range of dance styles and forms, analyse their performances compared to previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best.

  • GCSE Dance – Dance City can work with your students to create your group choreography or to develop into different dance styles.
  • BTEC – Weekly sessions can support your students to build on their technique and explore different dance styles.
  • Teacher support – Teachers are invited to observe and participate in workshops to gain more confidence to use dance in their teaching practice and to create their own workshop ideas.
