Mathrown Roundhouse

The Roundhouse has new 5* ‘Iron Age Facilities’

We now have 2 beautiful dry composting loos up at the Roundhouse complete with electric lights!! Mike is so very proud of them (how sad!!!!!). He reckons that any Iron Age dweller would fought battles for a loo like that!

They are built in to a new little Roundhouse - we knocked the old one down and started again. It really is very pretty - Jem thatched it and gave it a heather ventilation ‘hat’. Come and try it out when you get the chance – this truly is a poo with a difference!!!!

If you truly want to live the Iron Age life there is a large wood burner which cunningly converts to an open fire in the middle of the roundhouse on which you can cook your meals or even just make a brew. However for those who want an easier lifetasty home-made meals are also available to order down at the bunkhouse (advance notice required).

Annan - Esk - Lower Nith & Upper Nith

Bottom sheet, pillow and pillowcase are provided.

Additional Kitchen at the Bunkhouse

We had been aware for some time that pressure for use of the kitchen on busy weekends (particularly when Pam is catering for one group and there are other self catering groups) had caused some stress on all parties. With this in mind we have converted the old pantry – at the opposite end of the dining room to the existing kitchen. This has now been completed and should make meal times a far more relaxed affair in the future.

Nith bunkhouse has a cosy lounge with a wood burning stove for those chilly evenings where you can gather round and chat. There is also a DVD/Video player and a selection of films.

The Esk /Annan Veranda has a multi-fuel stove which heats radiators in those two bunkhouses as well as being a nice place to sit and natter!

Outside there is a play area for football, badminton, volleyball or basket ball along with hot tub, sauna and BBQ area.

American style Tipi

Marthrown Tipi

For a slightly different experience how about chilling out in a native American style Tipi.

In the Tipi there are 4 mattresses. It has a wood burning stove, rugs and 4 bean chairs as well as all the cooking and dining equipment you will need. There is a 2 ring stove in a separate cooking shelter about 15-20 meters away. It also has a BBQ and picnic table and use of the outdoor fire pit. All you need to bring are sleeping bags and torches! Lighting is from LED battery lights - sorry there is no mains power but it is possible to charge phones, laptops etc down here at the centre

There are 2 dry composting loo's and a hot shower on site about 40 meters from the tipi or there are conventional ones for you to use at the bunkhouse.

Our Tipi is only up Easter to October for 'Glamping' holidays in Mabie Forest, Dumfries and Galloway.

For family groups it gives children the chance to play freely (the way we used to!) before the days of Play Stations, mobile phones and fashion!

Marthrown Yurt - sleeps up to 4.

Our Mongolian Yurt (or Ger to give it its correct name) has proved very popular with couples, small groups and families interested in 'Glamping' in Mabie Forest in Dumfries and Galloway, southern Scotland.

The centrepiece of the Yurt is a very effective wood burning stove which has an oven in which you can rustle up a tasty meal.

Roundhouse Comments:

“ I’m definitely a city girl at heart but I challenge anyone not to embrace nature whilst here! The night in the Roundhouse pleasantly surprised me (I nearly chickened out in favour of the bunkhouse with my double duvet!) I would definitely do it again! Drinking champagne whilst in the hot tub at night spotting shooting stars was magical. I will never forget it!

The children have enjoyed their parents more relaxed attitude; the hot tub followed by the cold bucket shower but most of all toasting marshmallows round the Roundhouse fire whilst debating the best way to kill a werewolf!

Hugs and kisses from Sarah, Andrew, Catherine, Harry, Max and Toby .
