Explore the Railway
• Pickering Station is a must-see 1930’s themed station that will transport you back in time to the steam era.
• A must-see is the celebrity station, Goathland, which became Hogsmeade Station in the first Harry Potter film.
• Explore Grosmont Station which is home to the operating and engineering world of the NYMR. If you are lucky you might be able to catch a sneaky peak at the work taking place on our engines!
• Visit Whitby with its narrow streets and bustling harbour overlooked by the striking ruins of Whitby Abbey.

The Last Train

Let your pupils explore the impact of the 1965 closure of the Whitby to Pickering & Esk Valley railways on school children living in the North York Moors. Using 1965 newspaper reports and photographs as stimulus, students will imagine what it is like to be those children and write their own protest letters to Dr. Beeching using persuasive writing techniques.

Spend all day at the NYMR and let your pupils experience a heritage rail journey with on-board activities with our history guide! Let your pupils discover why the railways were a significant turning point in British history. Discover the importance of Whitby and why and when we changed from horse- drawn steam. Learn about the life of George Stephenson, designer of the railway and interesting facts about the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.

You will be met at the station by a ‘Billeting Officer’ who will check children for labels and gas mask boxes before boarding the train. (We will send you instructions on how to make gas mask boxes prior to your visit). Once on board students will be shown gas masks and gas rattles, learn about air raids and listen to reminiscence of real life evacuees from Middlesbrough evacuated during WW2 on this train route. Your pupils will also take part in a moral boosting WW2 sing-song and undertake an activity “Who will you be housed with?”

What size groups do they cater for?

If you want to just travel on the railway we can cater for all size school groups.

Packages (The Last, Steaming through History and Evacuation Experience) are limited to 35 pupils plus teachers as we like to ensure that everyone has a fantastic experience. Have more than this in your class? Contact us and we will try and accommodate your school.

We are more than happy for children to take photos to share their memories with their families.

How do you arrange a risk assessment?

We provide a sample risk assessment. This can be downloaded from our website.

We also provide 2 x familiarisation tickets allowing free entry ahead of the school trip date so teachers can complete their own risk assessment. These tickets are released once a provisional booking has been made.

Is specific clothing required?

Suitable clothing and sturdy shoes/trainers are essential. Please come prepared for the weather e.g. warm clothes, waterproofs, sun hats, sun cream and bottles of water as appropriate.
