Herts Young Mariners Base Outdoor Centre, known as HYMB, has been delivering high quality outdoor education sessions to young people and adults for over 50 years. We are based in Cheshunt, in the heart of the Lee Valley Park, Hertfordshire.

We can tailor a program to meet your groups needs; whether to cover a particular curriculum element, team building, leadership skills or just a fun day out. We offer camping for groups on site but are also conveniently located next to the 5 star Lee Valley Youth Hostel.

Why is this venue great for School Trips and Educational Visits?

We offer high quality outdoor education sessions tailored to your groups needs. We can offer taster days, reward days, on-going multi-activity sessions or courses working towards National Accreditation. HYMB works with anyone over the age of 8, including those with special needs.

We are fully wheel chair accessible and have a waterside hoist for easy access on to our lake.

HYMB is situated a 2 minute walk from Cheshunt Station, on the main line to London Liverpool Street, Stratford, Cambridge and Stanstead airport. We can also visit local schools to deliver some of our activities on your site.

As well as offering camping facilities to groups, including camp equipment hire through the Herts County Council Campstore, we are also conveniently situated next the 5 Star Lee Valley Youth Hostel.

What does a typical school trip or educational visit include?

We can offer a variety of different activity options and subjects across the key stages, including archery, climbing, canoeing, kayaking, sailing, orienteering, raft building which can include design and technology, PHSE, Math’s, geography and science.

We also can develop the softer skills such as resilience, confidence, leadership, evaluation and reflecting skills, team building and group work. All our activities and programs can be specifically tailored to your group’s needs. We can offer half day, full day or multi-activity days.

We hold the LOtC badge, AALA, have Royal Yachting Association and British Canoeing centre recognition. We are also an Approved Accredited Provider for the Duke of Edinburgh Award.

What size groups do they cater for?

We can cater for up to 200 participants.

What can they provide you with to support your school trip or educational visit?

We are happy to put something together when required. A lot of teacher and parent information is viewable on our website.

Can you take photos, video or audio? Are there any copyright restrictions?

This is down to each individual school policy on photographs and digital imagery. We do not take photos or digital images without parental consent.

How do you arrange a risk assessment?

Please call or email the centre to enquire and discuss your groups needs and aims for the session. We normally require a minimum of 2 weeks’ notice for group activities. Once confirmed a booking form along with risk assessments, risk management summaries and any other relevant paperwork will be emailed to the group.

What does it cost?

We charge per instructor and our normal ratio is 1 instructor per group of 10. Prices are dependent on time of year, and a separate small affiliation fee is payable. For our Peak period prices start from £112 per instructor per 2 hour session, for our mid-season prices start from £93 per instructor per 2 hour session and for our off-peak prices start from £75 per instructor per 2 hour session.

Is specific clothing required?

A full kit list will be provided for all trips.

Do you have first aid on site?

All instructional staff are 1st aid trained.

What facilities do they have for school trips and educational visits?

Groups have use of a classroom to leave belongings in during activities and if staying for the day, this makes a suitable place for lunch in bad weather. We have a balcony area and plenty of outside space for a picnic. We have snack machines and a hot drinks machine on site. The Lee Valley Youth hostel, based next door to the centre, is able to provide catering by prior arrangement.

Are there disabled facilities?

We have disabled changing facilities including a tracking hoist and waterside hoist. The site is fully wheel chair accessible. Our staff are trained and experienced in working with children with disabilities and we can adapt most of our activities to suite. Please let us know of your groups needs at time of booking.

What are your opening days and hours?

We are open all year round. During the summer season Monday to Friday 9am until 9pm and 9am-5pm over the weekend. During the winter months Monday to Friday 9am until 5pm.
