We are located in Chichester Harbour, which offers miles of sheltered tidal water and is set within a superb rural landscape, great for wildlife and ideal for those who enjoy water sports and land-based activities. As an independent charity, which has operated for over 50 years in partnership with the West Sussex County Council Youth Service, our aim is: To help educate young people in West Sussex, to develop their physical, mental and spiritual capacities so that they may grow to full maturity as individuals and members of society and that their conditions of life may be improved. We use an excellent range of equipment and qualified staff to help us deliver a variety of taster sessions, camps, expeditions and certificated courses . Why is this venue great for School Trips and Educational Visits? We are situated in an rural setting on an area of outstanding natural beauty, right on the shore of Bosham Channel in Chichester Harbour. Placed between the Southdowns, Chichester, and the Coast, we are well placed for: • Physical activities we provide such as water sports, orienteering, mountain biking. What does a typical school trip or educational visit include? A group can come for ½ day, day, or multiple visits, camp in our field (depending on time of year), or hire our residential accommodation. We usually only provide taster sessions (for all our activities) or structured courses in sailing & paddlesport. Trips around the harbour can also be organised. But we’re always willing to discuss any other way we can fit in to your stay with us. The content of you’re visit can be tailored for you needs. What size groups do they cater for? Minimum Group Size based on 8. Maximum group size need to be discussed at time of booking (it depends on resources available to us at the time) but to give you an idea typical groups sizes are between 20 & 30, we have catered for groups around 100. What can they provide you with to support your school trip or educational visit? Not usually, although we can pass on the syllabus from our structured courses. Can you take photos, video or audio? Are there any copyright restrictions? Yes we are happy and do not currently have any restrictions on participants taking the above. Anyone not directly involved with a course must seek the centre managers expressed permission. How do you arrange a risk assessment? Not where groups are non residential. With regards to specific activities we are inspected by AALA and appropriate NGB’s and that is one of their checks. However we may provide site risk assessments where necessary. Any questions or concerns can be voiced to the centre manager. What are the contact details for their education officer? Please call the number above for further details and bookings. What does it cost? Costs vary according to activities, numbers and duration. Prices are given on application. Is specific clothing required? Specific kit lists is available from us on request depending on what activities you’re doing and whether you are residential or not. However in general, participants will be taking part in activities in a rural environment. Therefore it is strongly advised that you wear clothes you do not mind getting dirty or wet. Good footwear is essential, fashion shoes are strongly advised against and any backless shoes (like flip flops) are banned. Participants should always make provision for the weather based on the forecast. Important safety items are provided by the centre, including buoyancy aids, cag tops and trousers. Wet suits can be hired. Do you have first aid on site? All instructors at the centre are qualified first aiders and there is a first aid point in our office. However if you have a residential group it would be down to the group to provide a first aider as there is not always a qualified member of staff on site overnight. What facilities do they have for school trips and educational visits? We do have areas on site to eat lunch indoors and outdoors. Unless you are a residential or camping group there are no facilities to make food. We do not have a canteen where you can buy food so groups on a day visit will need to bring their own refreshments. It may be possible to visit other parts of the harbour where facilities are available but provision for this will have to be made in your program. Are there disabled facilities? All parts of our site are accessible by wheelchairs. Some of our activities can accommodate the disabled. We have a dedicated wheelchair boat ‘Cobnor Chairboat’ which can take 5 wheelchairs and 5 helpers in one trip. A wheelchair assessable walk to ‘Cobnor Point’ starts very close to the centre. It’s a great path to see the action on the water between Bosham channel, Itchenor channel and you can see all the way to East Head. Contact the centre to discuss you’re specific requirements.
