School Trip & Group Educational Information

Introduction for school trips and educational visits

Let us show you around our historic city…

There is no better introduction to York than to take a tour on one of the famous red CitySightseeing open top buses. The commentary will tell you all about the many things there are to see and do in this fascinating city.

We suggest you do a complete tour first, to orientate yourself, and then use the buses to get around from place to place.  Tickets are valid for 48 hours and you can hop on and off the frequent services as often as you wish. There are stops close to all the major attractions and our friendly drivers will advise on the best place to alight for whatever you particularly want to do.

During the summer months there are five buses an hour.  Two have a professional guide on-board to fascinate you with their fund of facts and quirky tales about this historical city.  One is our Family Fun tour with a commentary aimed at the younger passenger (but adults will understand it too!).  One is our multilingual tour which has an earphone system delivering the commentary in nine languages, including English.  And the fifth bus, a black one, is our new Terrible Tales tour, recounting the more gruesome aspects of York’s 2000 year history.

York CitySightseeing is a Quality Assured Visitor Attraction, having been audited and accredited by Visit Britain for the last four years.

We will be very happy to welcome you aboard and to show you around.

Private hire:

If you would like a sightseeing bus exclusively for your party, we can do that…
Talk to us in advance and we will arrange a tour bus  with a driver and live guide to show you around.  Our guides are very knowledgeable and interact well with our younger customers, engaging them in the tour and delighting them with funny (and gory) stories of York’s past.  If there is a particular period of history you would like the guide to bring to the fore, they will be happy to oblige.

We will pick your group up at your accommodation* or at any city centre bus stop, including the Railway Station or any designated coach set-down point (coaches are not permitted within the City Walls) and after a tour lasting approximately an hour we will set you down again wherever you wish – at your next activity perhaps?

During school and public holidays we are much busier and cannot always accommodate Private Hires.  Give us a ring to check.  School parties are always welcome on the regular tours, though.

For a no obligation quote call 01904 633 990 or email info@transdevyork.co.uk

*Within the city boundary and subject to access for a double decker bus being available.

Why is this venue great for School Trips and Educational Visits?

CitySightseeing is an ideal way for school groups to see the city.  The youngsters get a bird’s eye view of the sights from the top deck (a novelty all kids seem to love).  The party is kept safely together with no possibility of individuals wandering off or being endangered by traffic. The educational commentary (which is fun too) engages everyone on the bus, not just those at the head of the crocodile! To put it simply, it’s both educational and FUN!

What does a typical school trip or educational visit include?

One option we offer is a private tour with your own guide.  The guide will certainly grab the children’s attention – our staff have a great deal of experience in entertaining younger passengers.  If you wish the guide to cover any particular period of history – remember that, in York, we can show something from every period over the last 2000 years - we will be happy to do this. Please give us advance notice of age groups and any topics or periods of interest.

What size groups do they cater for?

All our double decker tour buses carry a minimum of 70 passengers seated.  Upstairs, where most kids want to sit, there are no fewer than 43 seats.  If your party consists of more than 43 children eager to ‘go upstairs’ we will split the tour, with a pause half way, so upstairs and downstairs passengers can change places! Alternatively, we can offer more than one bus.

If you want to join one of the scheduled tours with a party, it may be necessary to spread yourselves on to two or more consecutive buses, especially in the height of summer when our buses become quite busy.

What can they provide you with to support your school trip or educational visit?

Quiz sheets can be provided.  To get the answers you need to be paying attention!  Prizes not supplied.

Can you take photos, video or audio? Are there any copyright restrictions?

We would be quite disappointed if the kids didn’t want to take pictures of the sights - and each other riding on the top deck!

The script for the commentaries is copyright so we do not provide copies or recordings of them. Video or audio recording for commercial purposes is not allowed but is permissible for personal or educational purposes.

How do you arrange a risk assessment?

A risk assessment is available and can be provided upon request.

What are the contact details for their education officer?

No, but please contact our office (info@transdevyork.co.uk) with any information requests.

What does it cost?

Ticket prices for 2011:

Adult (including one accompanying child free) £10.00
Student (with appropriate ID) £7.00
Child (5-15) £4.00
Child (up to 5) up to 2 free with each full fare paying Adult

Various discounts are available for parties, depending on composition.  Call us with your requirements and we will work out the best deal for you.

Private tours with a guide from £210 – call us on 01904 65 55 85 or email for a no-obligation quote enquiries@transdevyork.co.uk .

Is specific clothing required?

In summer we strongly recommend that children wear hats and sun lotion/block upstairs.  The breeze when the bus is moving disguises the heat of the sun on young skin. Hats should be secure because the breeze can have an effect on headwear too!

In winter (yes, we operate all year round) children need to be warmly dressed – it can get a bit nippy on top!

Suitable wet weather clothing may be required at any time of year.

Do you have first aid on site?

Every bus carries a basic first aid kit, but we do not have a qualified first aider on every bus.

What facilities do they have for school trips and educational visits?

Once the children have their tickets all the fun is free. Young children will receive a Passport pack with puzzles, colouring pens and a chance to enter a drawing competition with great prizes (please tell the driver if you do not want these to be distributed). On multilingual buses a complimentary pair of earphones is provided.

Are there disabled facilities?

Normally, at least two of our buses an hour are low floor, ramp access vehicles which accommodate one passenger in a wheelchair in a secure area on the lower deck. All vehicles have accommodation for folded wheelchairs and the driver will be happy to assist if necessary.

Wheelchair accessible and multilingual buses are normally allocated to our regular timetabled service and are not available for private hire during the day.
