Why is this venue great for School Trips and Educational Visits? A total of 18 English Heritage properties (2010) have been awarded Sandford Awards, the industry’s top accolade for heritage education, and Discovery Visits available at each were a key factor in the judges’ decisions. Of one the judges said: “English Heritage is to be applauded for the development of the Discovery Visits, which interpret the story of the site and give a sense of time and place to visiting schools.” What does a typical school trip or educational visit include? Will Henry break the habit in a Dissolution drama? Did dragon’s live in castles? Were the legends of King Arthur truth or fiction? Find out the answers to these and many other questions in Discovery Visits at internationally-renowned pre-historic earthworks, recently-used fortresses, medieval abbeys, Tudor castles and more. “The quality of the presentations made to young visitors by members of the education staff … is impressive. The … ruins are restored in the mind’s eye and become once again peopled by former residents as the now empty spaces are explained and their use demonstrated. Through the careful examination of artefacts, the visual impact of costume and the friendly enthusiasm of the presenters, life in a medieval castle is explained.” - Sandford Award for Heritage Education judge on the Discovery Visit at Farleigh Hungerford Castle, winner of a Sandford Award in recognition of the quality education offered at the site. For up-to-date details of sites offering Discovery Visits please visit www.english-heritage.org.uk/education As well as free entry to all 400 English Heritage properties, Discovery Visits are also available at some major properties. They are always stimulating and fun, enabling children to meet colourful characters from the past, to role-play, make or handle objects, dress up, solve problems or crack secret codes! Discovery Visits are linked to the curriculum and different key stages and are developed by experts, specialist educators, teachers and trained site staff and education volunteers. Discovery Visits: • Are led by specialist educators or trained site staff and volunteers who know their sites inside out Quotes “Absolutely brilliant – the kids loved it” “Fitted in with everything we are doing on the subject” “We liked the mixture of listening and then doing. The activities provided were excellent and engaging” “My class were enthralled and have been talking non stop about their visit. I am glad we made the effort of sitting for 2 hours in the coach – it really was worth it!” (teachers) “Really good fun” “The best day out I’ve ever had” “The best bit was getting to do things not just listening and looking” (students) “It’s feelings and experiences that are important. Through them the true story of a place can be brought alive” “Re-enactment is a brilliant way to teach. It engages children who then become interested and start listening to what you say” (Discovery Visit leaders) What size groups do they cater for? Up to 30 per group. The ratio of adults to children is 1:6 for years up to year 3 (8 years and under) and 1:15 for all other groups. What can they provide you with to support your school trip or educational visit?
