Suffolk, NR32 1HH England WEBSITE LINK: http://www.marinatheatre.co.uk EMAIL ADDRESS: info@marinatheatre.co.uk CONTACT: 01502 533200 School Trip & Group Educational Information Introduction for school trips and educational visits The 750 seat Edwardian Marina Theatre in Lowestoft, is Britain’s most Easterly theatre and has been at the cultural heart of North Suffolk for over 100 years. The Marina Theatre regularly attracts top class entertainment from around the World and is proud to have the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra as its resident orchestra. We have a wide range of entertainment from spectacular West End musicals, enchanting world class ballet and opera companies, popular comedians, specialist acrobatic acts from around the world, spine tingling thrillers, dramas and top class comedies. Children’s and family shows, educational curriculum based productions and, new for 2008, famous faces from stage and screen come to Lowestoft for the theatre’s first professional pantomime in 50 years with a spectacular production of Peter Pan. Our auditorium is available to hire for conferences, local community events, local dance school performances and school presentation evenings. And if that wasn’t enough, we also have the biggest cinema screen in the area and one of the cheapest cinema admission prices in the country! Why is this venue great for School Trips and Educational Visits? Parts of the venue date back over 100 years. Originally starting life as a roller skating rink, the Marina was converted into a theatre at the end of the 19th century. The theatre has been closely linked with the town’s fishing industry and some of its original stage lifting equipment was modeled on rigging used on local ships. The venue is now an important part of the regeneration of the town of Lowestoft, providing entertainment for both residents and tourists throughout the year. Many famous names have appeared at the Marina including, Gracie Fields and Ralph Richardson, and in more recent years, performers as diverse as Lee Evans and Petula Clark to Lesley Garrett and Basil Brush. The association with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra provides a number of opportunities for schools to become more involved in both the theatre and the orchestra’s education programmes. Theatre tours are often available and can be made to link with workshops, live performances or film. What does a typical school trip or educational visit include? Different shows allow for different inclusions. We can tailor your visit to a live show or film, wherever possible, to include theatre tours, meet and greets with the actors or workshops. Our tours can include talks on backstage and technical areas, Front of House, and the Marina Theatre’s history. What size groups do they cater for? We can cater for any group size from 20 to 720. What can they provide you with to support your school trip or educational visit? Many curriculum-based productions provide teachers packs that we can forward or are available from the corresponding shows own websites. Any further information that may be required, we will endeavor to obtain on your behalf. Can you take photos, video or audio? Are there any copyright restrictions? Copy-write restrictions prevent the use of any type of photographic or recording equipment within the auditorium. However, we do not mind photographs of the front of house areas, backstage areas, some stage sets and auditorium during tours – just not during a performance! How do you arrange a risk assessment? We have up to date risk assessments available to send to teachers prior to their visit, and our Health & Safety officer can answer any further queries you may have. What are the contact details for their education officer? We do not currently have an education officer, however, we will strive to answer any queries and advise as required. What does it cost? For groups we would generally offer the lowest seat price possible, depending on seat location, and we offer 1 free seat in every 10 booked for parties of 20 or more. For our pantomime we offer a number of specific schools performances timed to fit in with the school day, which have a generously discounted ticket rate for schools groups. You can also pre-order your groups ice creams or refreshments in advance, which will also include a discount. Is specific clothing required? No. Do you have first aid on site? Members of our staff both Front of House and Backstage have basic first aid training. What facilities do they have for school trips and educational visits? As an Edwardian building, the Front Of House areas at the Marina are comparatively small, however, we have a competitively priced ice cream and confectionery area and many touring shows also sell merchandise. The theatre’s location in the heart of the town centre, offers visitors the opportunity to combine a visit to the theatre with either a trip to the historic high street and its shops, the harbour and heritage quay and the seafront. Are there disabled facilities? The venue has a hearing loop system, automatic entrance doors and flat floor access to the stalls, foyer area and disabled toilet. Wheelchair spaces are located in the auditorium with seats directly next to them for the rest of the party. Some productions include a sign language interpreted performance.
