School Trip & Group Educational Information.

Introduction for school trips and educational visits.

Shore surf is a British Surfing Association Level 4 surf school. We are not only the most established mobile surf school in the area, but also run daily lessons from our surf centre in St. Ives Bay and our Surf camp on the beautiful National Trust beach of Godrevy.

Pete and Laurence, who both have been coaching over 10 years (various levels from beginner to competition surfing) and their team will take care of you and ensure that you will experience a safe, relaxed and affordable introduction to surfing and it’s unique lifestyle.

All our coaches are not only fully qualified lifeguards and surf instructors, but also experienced surfers themselves with vast amounts of local knowledge, which will benefit you on your unique surf holiday with Shore Surf School. What does a typical school trip or educational visit include?

Due to the size and differing abilities and ages of the school groups we cater for. Shore surf school has or develops bespoke lesson plans to suit these varying needs. Listed below is how a basic beginners “Learn to Surf” taster lesson would be structured.

On arrival all group members are required to fill out a health and safety form. All medical details or specific needs will be identified and noted by the head instructor.

All party members are then issued with and instructed on how to put on wetsuits, boots and gloves (if required) and identification vests. Then given soft surfboards and instructed on how to carry them correctly to the beach.

At the beach the group is arranged into a semi circle where they will undergo a surfing specific warm up and safety brief, where all students are made aware of the lesson plan, dangers and all the signals/commands used by the instructors.

On the beach all parties are then introduced to the prone section of the lesson, where they will be shown how to enter the water safely and ride waves lying down from waist depth into the shore. Once the head instructor is content with the group’s progress he/she will instruct them to remain on the shoreline, re-brief them of all signals, then enter the water and give a demonstration. The group will then enter the water and the instructors will offer all support required, the group will be continuously head counted and if there are any dangers (i.e. rip-currents, rocks, etc) the entire group will be recalled using the designated signal. Once the head coach is satisfied with the entire group’s progress he/she will signal their return to the beach.

The group is again arranged in a semi circle and offered a demonstration on how to “snap” from prone to standing, then requested to practice on the beach. During this part of the lesson the instructors will offer all advice on correct technique. Once the head instructor is happy he/she will instruct them to remain on the shoreline, re-brief them of all signals, then enter the water and give a demonstration. The group will then enter the water with the instructors. At all times as before the instructors will offer all support required and give advice and fault correction where and when needed, either in the water or on the beach.

All the students will be recalled to the beach at the end of the lesson; head counted, offered advice on how to carry the board, and then walked back to the surf centre or camp. Before the group members change they will be briefed on times and nature of the next lesson and where to leave their equipment.
