Berkeley
Gloucestershire, GL13 9BQ England WEBSITE LINK: http://www.berkeley-castle.com EMAIL ADDRESS: info@berkeley-castle.com CONTACT: 01453 810332 School Trip & Group Educational Information Introduction for school trips and educational visits Berkeley Castle is one of the most remarkable buildings in Britain and possibly the most outstanding example of Mediaeval domestic architecture in the country. Where other Castles were romanticised or "modernised" by the Georgians or the Victorians, Berkeley quietly survived as what it is: a 12th Century Norman fortress with an enclosing 13th Century curtain wall, built and enlarged through the mediaeval period and beyond into a secure, comfortable, substantial home. Much of England’s history is associated with the Castle and the Berkeley Family. We also have the 6,000 acre Estate to utilise, including our Deer Park and Butterfly House. Why is this venue great for School Trips and Educational Visits? How many Castles can you visit where a King was murdered and still see the very room in which it happened? Berkeley Castle is unique in being still lived in by the family that built it in the 12th Century. The probable remains of a Saxon mynster (nunnery) have been discovered around the Castle and on the Estate, plus we also work very closely with the adjacent Edward Jenner Museum, where you can learn about the discovery of vaccination. What does a typical school trip or educational visit include? We are happy to tailor visits to specific learning or curriculum needs, but otherwise we can cover most subjects, from history to geography, nature to art, citizenship, religious studies and science. What size groups do they cater for? Groups of 25 can be taken around the Castle but we can deal with much larger numbers and divide into appropriate sized groups. What can they provide you with to support your school trip or educational visit? No, we provide the Castle and guides and the teachers can decide what elements they want to use of the Castle and Estate. Can you take photos, video or audio? Are there any copy write restrictions? No photography is allowed in the Castle. How do you arrange a risk assessment? To book a visit for at the Castle for a risk assessment call the Office: 01453 810 332 (We do not provide a risk assessment) What are the contact details for their education officer? We do not have an education officer. What does it cost? We offer a discount for groups call the Office on 01453 810 332 for more information and to discuss your group requirements. Is specific clothing required? Depending on weather and if the wider Estate is being visited, no special clothing is needed for the Castle. But if going out to fields etc then appropriate clothing should be brought. Do you have first aid on site? We cannot guarantee access to a first aider, it would be better to bring one. What facilities do they have for school trips and educational visits? We have a shop at the Castle and one at the Butterfly House, the latter has plenty of “pocket money” purchases available. We also have Tea Rooms and picnic areas if pack lunches are brought. Pocket Money amount suggested between £2 - £5. Are there disabled facilities? We have extremely limited disabled access to the Castle, and no disabled toilet. Please call the Office 01453 810 332 if you need to discuss disabled access. Featured Listing: NoMore Information
