Gibside is cared for by the National Trust and is an 18th century landscaped ‘forest garden’. Why is this venue great for School Trips and Educational Visits? Gibside is ideal for educational residential visits because: • A beautiful and unique venue. Stay in the centre of a National Trust place, surrounded by 400 acres of woodland, fields and riverside, all of which can be explored during your stay. • Superb location. Gibside feels very rural but is conveniently located to major roads including the A1 at Gateshead. • Our activities. As well as lots of environmental activities at Gibside, we are setting up close links with partners in our area, to help you access their educational facilities during your stay. • We are well known for our friendly and welcoming staff. • Our local food policy means that we can supply you with local food, when available even from the Walled Garden. • Wildlife. Much of Gibside is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and abounds with wildlife such as roe deer, badgers and red kites. Wildlife monitoring would be part of your stay. What does a typical school trip or educational visit include? A typical stay would include space to run, nature, fresh air, tranquillity and delicious local food. Wildlife-watching and even monitoring is a must, including watching the swallows nesting under your windows. What size groups do they cater for? We cater for a maximum group size of 37 in two dormitories and two double leaders’ rooms. We are currently unable to provide accommodation for bus drivers, but there is a good B&B locally. What can they provide you with to support your school trip or educational visit? We are currently in the process of developing packs and worksheets, but can still provide lots of help to meet your requirements. Can you take photos, video or audio? Are there any copy write restrictions? Children are welcomed to take a record of their stay, including photo’s, video and audio. How do you arrange a risk assessment? We can provide help to write your risk assessments. All of our activities are risk assessed. What are the contact details for their education officer? Please contact on above number. What does it cost? 2008 Costs: 4-7 nights £881.25 inc. VAT per group. Currently this does not include catering or activities which in 2008 are extra. In 2009, the year of the full launch of the new Eco-centre, all will be inclusive and therefore easier to book. Is specific clothing required? Outdoor clothing is recommended. Do you have first aid on site? We have qualified first aiders on site. What facilities do they have for school trips and educational visits?
• Dormitory bedrooms/bunkbeds. Are there disabled facilities? Gibside is partially accessible. We have a mobility vehicle, the Tramper, which can be borrowed to access the estate. The accommodation is on the first floor of the converted stables, reached across a cobbled courtyard and up stairs or a lift. The disabled shower is accessible to most but not all users.
