School Trip & Group Educational Information

Introduction for school trips and educational visits

The Grand Opera House York is a 1000 capacity touring theatre situated in the centre of York and is the home of live entertainment in the region. From West End musicals to stand up comedians, live bands to family shows, we present an irresistible mix of shows for all tastes.

We are more than happy to welcome school groups to the theatre.  Many of the shows we offer are specifically aimed at primary school groups, with special school matinees during the day.  Past shows have included Horrible Histories, Danny The Champion of the World, and even Johnny Spacehopper and His Vital Statistics, a show all about maths!  Shakespeare 4 Kids also visit regularly with their musical adaptations of Shakespeare, and not forgetting our annual family pantomime!

For secondary school groups we present the best touring ballets, operas and musicals.  Upcoming shows include Blood Brothers and Flashdance The Musical.

Check out our website for what's on information, or contact us for more information.  Most of our productions have great discounts for school parties.  We look forward to seeing you soon!
Why is this venue great for School Trips and Educational Visits?
Live theatre is unbeatable as a way of getting children and young people enthused about their studies.  From 3D history shows to live experiments bringing science to life, a visit to the theatre can be a great way to expand on work within the class room.  For older students studying dance, drama, music or English, we present some of the best productions currently touring the country or out of the West End.

Resource packs are available for the majority of our productions and we offer simple payment options, risk assessments and even somewhere to eat packed lunches.

If you would like to discuss possible backstage tours, workshops, or anything else, please ask!

What does a typical school trip or educational visit include?

The nature of your visit will depend on the show you choose to come and see.  Over the course of a year we usually present shows suitable for all the key stages and based on different topics.  We can also arrange backstage tours, or opportunities to meet our staff and learn about working in a theatre.  If there’s something you’d like to do, just ask and we’ll tailor make something special for your group!
What size groups do they cater for?
Our theatre can hold up to 1000 people.

What can they provide you with to support your school trip or educational visit?

Many of our productions offer resource packs full of fun ideas to take back to the classroom.  These are usually put together by education teams with the production or our own education teams write them.

Can you take photos, video or audio? Are there any copy write restrictions?

For the majority of productions we are not allowed to take photos during the shows, but there may be opportunities to meet the cast after the show or perhaps explore the stage.  Please ask for more information.

How do you arrange a risk assessment?

We do provide risk assessments.

What are the contact details for their education officer?

We don’t have an education officer here in York, but a couple of our sister venues do and we can borrow them for projects if need be.  Also education staff can come as part of a production.

What does it cost?

Costs vary depending on the show, but there is usually a very substantial discount for school parties.  We also usually offer one adult free with every ten children.

Is specific clothing required?

Not at all.

Do you have first aid on site?

We have numerous first aiders within the building.

What facilities do they have for school trips and educational visits?

We have facilities to eat packed lunches, although this must be booked in advance as space is limited.  We also have bars serving a variety of beverages including soft drinks as well as two sweet kiosks which also sell soft drinks as well as sweets, chocolate and popcorn.

Are there disabled facilities?

We have 5 wheelchair spaces within the stalls, with level access and a disabled toilet nearby.  We also offer a Sennheiser infrared system for the hard of hearing and will soon be introducing captioned, audio described and signed performances.  Please ask for more details.
